Hardware Question

Post by belchingmatt »

I have an HP2550 printer at work that is USB only. Now we have more people in that office this now needs to be shared amongst up to four people (minimum 2) as they are likely to be printing stuff such as payroll info that us mere mortals shouldn't catch sight of.

I've seen this Clicky as an example, but are there better or cheaper options?

That one has good reviews, and that's cheap for a proper print server. I've actually got an even cheaper Origo one, but it needs software installing on the client PC and it's also not Vista compatible.

The alternative is to simply plug it into the nearest PC and share it. That'll maybe set you back 90p for a USB extension lead if you need to move it.

I really need a standalone network solution rather than a share as all the laptops in that office, or the users are in and out like a yo-yo. As it's someone else's money I'm not that picky. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You could get a network module for the printer maybe. Have a look on the HP website; there's more than one 2550 though so you need to know the exact model.

That would definately be the best way to do it. There are some Jetdirect modules going on eBay for 99p but I wouldn't know which one would fit.

I've just ordered the one you suggested. I'm sure that the ?53 will easily go missing in amongst the ?1M we spend for 3 days rig hire. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I hope it works. The comments suggest its better than the Linksys one and pretty easy.

Just remember to read the quick guide before you go poking things </unlikely> <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well I was looking at the Linksys but as I'm used to the D-Link web interface I have a good idea what to expect and how easy it should be.

I do prefer the linksys colour scheme though. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well the dooberywhatsit turned up this afternoon and I have it installed already. The biggest headache was XP not having the drivers ready and being unable to download them automatically. After getting them myself and pointing the wizard in their direction it worked faultlessly.

The handy thing (possibly) is that dabs delivered two and the order confirmation is only for one. I'll get a look at the dispatch note tomorrow and if there is only one on that I'll eBay the spare. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

LMAO that's extra-efficient of them <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Does the box need drivers itself, or was it just the HP printer drivers you needed?

The box doesn't need drivers itself, but it does need to have them for the specific printer that it will be serving.

That's cool.

My stupidly cheap one needed its own drivers which makes it very much less compatible. It was very cheap though, and it works for me. It's also a 4 port switch and NAT firewall <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This one is solely a print server with no extra ports, but as we have a fully cabled office there doesn't seem much of a requirement.
