I resisted and resisted in Oz and they never once got me to say dartabase instead of database. What made me think of this was bratty's thread about politeness over at Dennis. In Oz the most likely response to 'how do you do' or 'alright' would be no worries, with or without a mate. A term which I now use fairly frequently.

Anyway a couple of things I noticed about Oz when I first got there a couple of years ago have since become part of my life now. When a cashier at the supermarket asks me if I want cashback I stare at them blankly until I register what they mean, and likewise when I ask for cashout they always look confused.

The same thing happens at fast food places. I normally expect to hear the question have here or take out, not eat in or take away?

I lived in Oz for less than a year, that was over four years ago now.

I still say 'no worries', it's a part of my vocabulary now. <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' />

Most other stuff I got into while I was there (when in Rome and all that...), although like you I stuck firm to my pronunciation. You don't tend to realise how much differences there are in a language until you've lived overseas for a while. After a few months, it sort of sticks with you and you stop noticing it so much - at least until you get back home.

Damn it's late. Perhaps it is a preemptive jetlag.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not sleeping too well either at the moment. (awake @ 7:15 this morning)

I fell asleep about 10pm last night, then woke up at 12:30 and didn't really get back to sleep.

Somehow I managed to not go to bed. I've woken up a bit so will probably end up watching a torrent that will finish in 5mins or continue with Ronin the graphic novel.
