LOL - one of my girlfriends used to do things like that. When I was cooking, I'd go to pick up the spoon I was using to stir the pot and she'd have washed it up already <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Although, being "too tidy" is probably easier to live with than the opposite <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Pah. Easy.? <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Nicely done <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

One minor technical point; the two braces should really be in opposite directions because they only give strength under pressure. If you leaned really hard against the right hand side, they'd both be under tension and the glue/screws could fail.

Although, I'm pretty sure it's sturdy enough that it'll out live all of us, and the fish. Possibly all man-kind <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'll tell you what though. Back-seat DIY is so much easier than the real thing. I realised that I did build one thing nearly that big, which was the bed in the spare room. I still haven't finished it nicely - I just covered it up with a sheet <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well, that is only one end of the cabinet, if I know Mr Red he'll most likely have done those two facing inwards and the two the other end facing towards them.

Voila!! / / &#092; &#092; ici <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Or, I could be wrong of course <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Still if it holds us both and cups of tea then I'll be happy, we've seen some seriously flimsy tank-stands in fish shops with massive tanks on top of them, some places are chipboard city, the one Red is building already far exceeds those ones.... <!--emo&:worthy:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/notworthy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='notworthy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well spotted, nice to see that university edumacation being put to good use!

What you completely failed to spot, though, (possibly because it's not in any of the pictures <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) is that there is actually a third brace at the other end, pointed the opposite way to the other two. Job done. I was going to make that middle bit an x-type brace, but on reflection I decided that a: it was too difficult to do, b: sawing the wood through the middle might actually weaken the structure, c: it probably wasn't necessary, and d: I didn't have enough wood anyway.

There'll also be a 1' wide bit of ply being screwed to the back of the unit, so I reckon it'll be plenty sturdy enough.

I realised that I did build one thing nearly that big, which was the bed in the spare room. I still haven't finished it nicely - I just covered it up with a sheet? <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Finishing is the difficult bit! I had a half finished tank lid that I was building sitting around for ages, until Mrs Red <s>nagged</s> persuaded me to get on and finish the thing.

I've lost count of the amount of houses I've been to where someone has started decorating, got halfway through, then given up and left it half done for several years. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

:EDIT:ed to include Mrs R's reply:

Not far off, except there's only one middle bit, so it's more like / &#092; &#092; . Not perfect, but certainly good enough. If there was more room for another inner bit, then I'd have done like you said.

You know me too well!

You're right, I reckon I'll need at least one more tin, maybe two.

The instructions on the side make me laugh:

Two coats are generally sufficient

Yeah right! Two coats looks rubbish... <!--emo&:whip:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/whip.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='whip.gif' /><!--endemo-->

TBH, you wouldn't really be enjoying it much... the place is covered in sawdust, and you'd have spent most of the last couple of nights in sneezing fits. Even more so tonight when I attack the frame with sandpaper! <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Also, the project has pretty much taken over the living room and most of the bedroom, so there's not much room anywhere. I would say it'd be great if we had a garage, but if we did it'd just be full of bits of car anyway! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

LOL - I did check out all the pictures carefully to see if you had, but I couldn't see it even on the ones where you'd started the finish. I feel very silly for ever doubting you.

Work is getting on nicely. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The frame is now stained, and the panels are going on:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2257.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2262.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2260.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Not sure what's going on with the camera, it seems to have selected 'blurry and pixellated' mode. <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo--> Maybe time to try and clean the lens!

Now all I've got to do is put all the bits of trim on, stain the trim and the top, fit the shelves, cut some wood for the doors, get them finished, stain them, varnish everything then fit the doors.

Actually, that's quite a bit to do! <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've got some sort of a plan to fit a few media buttons, an LCD display and maybe a DVD player (all linked to the PC) to a panel above the door in the centre part of the cabinet - for now though, I'll just put a blank panel in there and worry about that in the future.

Doors are on now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've finished up the top part, along with adding some finishing trim:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2271.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Busy at work with the sandpaper:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2273.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Good to see B&Q are keeping up their standards for straight wood: <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2275.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

And with the doors on:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2279.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2278.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

The little panel above the middle doors is a 'future feature'; I'm planning to fit a few buttons and controls for the media centre in there, along with (hopefully) a DVD drive, for direct access to all the common stuff. Because opening a cupboard door is so much work! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Jobs to do:

Test fit the shelves

Remove the doors and shelves

Stain all the parts that aren't already

Varnish everything

Refit and adjust the doors and shelves

Fit the doorknobs

Fit the carpet tiles to the underside (to stop it scratching the floor)

That's it!

Nearly there now...

I've been sending my Dad (woodworking genius and all-round good-guy) pictures of Red cabinet build, he's well-impressed and when I sent the last pics of it with the doors on, this was his reply:

"Looking (How do hip people say it?) 'Ossum Dude! So tidy too - I could obviously use a few tips on how to do stuff without ending up using every tool I own plus leaving heaps of crud around all mixed up with bits left over or just plain first tries that didn't quite work out" <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Mr Red is now boggling about the state Dad must get in during a project if he thinks Garry is "tidy" <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

P.S. Dad is one of "our kind" of people, he signed his email off to me with the following:

"(Space for handsome Avatar) (System Message: Dear Amy's Dad: Sorry, can't find one that does your outstanding fizzog justice)."

Everything is now stained, and I've just put on the second coat of varnish:

Ooh shiny!

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2282.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

That's with the varnish still wet, so it won't be that shiny when it's all done.

Just one more coat to put on tomorrow, then I've got to give it a day to dry before I reassemble it. Then that's the build done. <!--emo&:aha:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/aha.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='aha.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It'll be nice to have it all done, the whole build has kinda taken over our already small flat:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2281.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2284.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF2283.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

We're currently living in the bit of the bedroom where the bed is. <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

And that's not to mention the layer of dust over pretty much the whole place. Mrs R has been very good about the whole thing, but it's even getting to me now. I would do some dusting, but there's no point until I've finished all the sanding - it'll all be back tomorrow! <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm tiptoing about the place today, trying not to touch anything or kick up any dust. I've also got most of the windows closed to stop any crap flying in and getting all over my nice varnished stuff. Good job I like the smell of varnish! <!--emo&:pot:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/fly2.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fly2.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:pot:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/fly2.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fly2.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:Aaarghh:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/pirate.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pirate.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For the more technical bits, I've ordered one of these:

intellipanel

And one of these:

fancy switch

The idea is I plug all the media stuff into the intellipanel, wire the switch in to the PC and mount it to the front of the cabinet, so I can turn everything off with just the one switch - no mucking about opening cupboards to turn stuff on and off! <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->
