Anti-Zombie Weaponry.

Depending on the type of zombie you encounter (see Zombie Classification) you will more than likely find the need to defend yourself or loved ones. If you?re particularly stupid you can attempt hand to hand but unless you have a lot of training you will more than likely become you?re zombie attackers next meal.

So weapons are highly recommended. The question is what to use? Do you carry a big heavy weapon or go for something lighter that might break.

In this section I shall attempt to shed light on the different weapon you would likely have access to (please note; I (the writer) am English so many part of this will be spun toward the English, thus words and weapons may vary) around the home or close by.

Single and twin handed melee weapons;

The basic home has plenty of basic object that can be used to defeat a zombie attacker. Anything that can be swung at the head of the zombie works but up to a point. You shouldn?t head off with only a broom handle for protection.

Bludgeon Items:

?Swing for the head, don?t miss?

Finlay (2002 Outbreak, London)

Wooden Items (brooms, bats etc) ? Good for their lightness, bad for constant use. Items such as brooms will be quick to hand and due to their light weight will leave you with plenty of stamina to take down multiple attackers. The problem is they break. Items such as cricket bats will last longer than your standard broom but they will in the end break in half leaving you with nothing to stop the approaching shambling attacker. By all means keep a wooden item to hand for emergency but do not rely on them.

Metal Items (Pipes, metal bats) ? Good for constant use, bad for weight. A metal pipe of some sort is perfect for constant bashing but their can be a problem with items bending and snapping after too much use. Given the choice a metal item over a wooden item is preferred. Note the weight of the item, just because it?s very heavy doesn?t make it very good. Using a metal bat gives the best of both lightness and strength.

Hammer ? What can be better than a big hammer with which to smash the skulls of any nearby zombie? Well, a lot of things. Even though a hammer has the ?macho? factor about it, the weight is still an issue. A regular claw hammer means getting up close where as a sledge hammer allows a bigger swing with the downside of weight. Although, a hammer is also a useful took when out in the infested world. It?s yet another item that is handy to carry but not to be relied on.

Crowbar ? In a class of its own, this simple bit of twisted metal has the advantages of being light and allowing for some swing distance between you and a zombie. It also has the big plus of giving entry to locked rooms with the correct use, perfect little item that you should always have to hand. A shining example of its use can be found via Dr Freeman of the Black Mesa facility.

Other ? Pretty much any item that can be swung to inflict damage should work. You must always consider the items weight and durability of the item. It might crush a zombie skull in one hit but how many hits till you can?t swing it anymore?

Bladed/Sharp Weapons:

?This doesn?t need reloading?

R.Ducky (1999 Tokyo Outbreak)

Small blades (Kitchen knifes) ? They may not be able to smash a skull but a small blade or flick knife can come in handy. That is if you come across bandits or pirates in an infested area. When faced with a zombie a knife will do little more than get you close enough to be eaten. A small pen knife would be useful but only for survival, not for attack.

Large Blades (Hunting knife, machete size) ? A large knife has the problem of a small knife but a larger knife give you some distance and with the larger blade you have more cutting depth. A rotted zombie can easily be hacked up with minimal effort using a large blade. In a crowded situation a large knife also allows for removal of anything that get too close. It won?t stop a zombie but it stops them grabbing you, very handy weapon to have, the larger the blade the better.

Swords (Ornamental and true blades) ? An iconic image of a brave knight fills you?re mind when ever you think of swords. A blood soaked suit of steel stood over a battle field. It?s a large blade, it has weight for crushing, what ,more could you want. Indeed a sword is a very good weapon but the sword you have on you?re wall from eBay isn?t really going to cut it. Most ornamental swords are made cheaply and will bend or even snap with little use. They are nothing more than very large, heavy, shiny metal. However, if you own a true sword and have some skill with it then it will work perfectly for slicing down you?re undead foes.

Axes ? Combining the weight of a hammer with the sharpness of a blade, the axe is a mighty thing to have. If it doesn?t slice then the sheer weight will normally do the job for you. They also come in a range of types, sizes and materials in order to accommodate for any persons need. Suggested is a smaller axe along with a sharpening stone. Larger axes again have the ?macho? factor but the weight of carrying one around all day will be a lot.

Power tools:

?44cc of zombie shredding power!?

Craig (2000 Paris Outbreak)

Rotating Tools (drills, saws) ? Everyone has a drill or two around the house. A cordless drill armed with a decent drill bit, almost nothing can stop it. Unless the power runs out! Many power tools have excellent zombie stopping abilities but the power is an issue along with how close you need to be to use the weapon. A small power saw or drill means you need to get up close and personnel with any zombies close at hand, even then a kill isn?t definite. Unless you?re building a barricade, leave the little power tools.

Petrol Strimmers ? You can use electric but you?re not going to get far. The standard strimmer has a spinning bit of plastic at one end which isn?t going to take any bone from a zombie but it will strip flesh with ease. With some careful use could be used to take out key muscles but you?re still left with the rest of a wriggling zombie. Dump this pointless tool and grab a plank of wood instead.

Chainsaws ? For when you need to cut down whatever is in you?re path, a chainsaw is what you need. Hundred spinning teeth coupled with the sound of two stoke engine buzzing away gives you a feeling of invincibility. Until you fall on some zombie parts and more than likely send the chainsaw flying into your own supple flesh. The problem with the chainsaw is the fuel, in a zombie infested land most of the petrol will be taken by people fleeing to the next major populous. I do not recommend a chainsaw for it?s many problems. Although, if you have a base of operations close by then a chainsaws problems float away when you don?t need to carry it far.

Fire:

?Crispy!?

JJW (2004 Amsterdam Outbreak)

Lit and Thrown (Rags, cloth) ? When all else fails, good old fire can prevail. Problem comes when trying to set a zombie on fire. You can try throwing things that are on fire at a zombie but this can be very difficult. Instead of throwing things at the zombie, run instead.

Molotov Cocktail ? Stepping up a notch you?re basic MC is a bottle filled with some sort of flammable liquid, a rag and a match. You light the rag in the bottle filled with liquid then throw it. The result is a fireball that engulfs any nearby zombies. Except, zombies don?t feel pain and will merrily walk around on fire setting other things on fire. Like cars or other homes. If you have a clear area and somewhere to run then try a MC. Do NOT use in confined areas as you will set a lot of stuff on fire including yourself.

Bucket Of Petrol ? A step down from the MC, take a bucket of fuel. Throw at zombie. Light then run like hell. Same problems apply and the fuel could be used for better things. Good for if you need to clear and area of a zombie or two and have spare fuel.

NOTE : NOT DONE YET, DO MORE LATER
