But people have to sign up and have an account which you authorise to get access to the blogs don't they? Sure they'd be able to see the un-protected stuff, but can't you protect the rest of the stuff so only members can see any of the sections?

If you're worried about it from a data protection point of view then Red has said that we'll take it over, you can transfer the domain to him and then your anonymity will be as secure as you want.

I can sort of see your point, I'm quite anonymous on t'internetz anyway, but there are other options than just deleting the whole place, especially when we've all put so much time and history into it.

That was the theory...

Unfortunately, Google manages to access and cache that part because of the way searches work here. I've tried specifically blocking it, but that doesn't seem to work.

For example:

<a href='http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=JJW009 ... ad+risotto"' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=JJW009 ... isotto"</a>

To be honest, I think I'm just blowing smoke rings. I'll probably keep everything just the way it is...

Ok so the google cache shows the search-specific line or so of a post? But you still can't click on it and read anymore of it than is shown in the search page unless you have an account, and whoever was searching would have to get it exactly right to see anything at all. I did a search looking for the word "lick" with your handle on Google and no reference to the post I was thinking of even showed on the page until I typed the exact phrase!!

That's actually better security than LJ has, since you can read lots of posts just by clicking on them in the search pane unless the person has their settings all on "friends only" (which I do)

I don't know how worried you are about it, but I think the Members Only section is pretty secure from an information gathering point of view. The option of transferring the domain to dissociate yourself from your handle is still there if you want it though.

I've already deleted my Facebook and various other accounts I had. I'm pondering purging myself from a few other places which should be quite easy, but this place has my name all over it. If you do a domain lookup, you find my full name, address and telephone number.

I'm having very mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I do rather like it here. On the other, do I really want potential future employers reading what I've said in my blog..?
I thought the blogs and the NSFKW section were locked out unless you were a member?

Edit: should read everything before posting!

When you do the google search, click on where it says "cached" and you see the entire page even when not logged in. It will say "Welcome Guest" at the top of the page.

I do think it's "reasonably obscure", but it certainly isn't secure. Security by obscurity is not something I endorse.

I just thought of which post you might mean btw. Funny because I came across that picture again just the other day <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Would I be right in thinking you don't get access to the .htaccess file for the site?

If you can, you can lock it all down in that so that no search bots trawl the site.

So have you decided yet? I've kept blogging in the hope that you'll either keep it on or transfer the domain to Red so you won't be identifiable.......

My god I was in a grumpy, negative and antisocial mood. Sorry. <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Right, since I've opened an account with a 2 year contract for a domain I won't be using, I decided to moves this all over there too. My existing supplier expires in a few weeks, and the new one is cheaper. It's also UK based rather than American.

It's all set up and should be seamless <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

However, don't be surprised if it all goes horribly wrong for the next few days! Also, email me at my gmail account because this domain's email is likely to be made of fail now.

See you on the other side!

Your approval of this domain transfer has been successfully entered into the system. The domain transfer will begin.

A domain transfer typically takes 7-10 days once all parties agree.

Well it's happened. Did anyone even notice the downtime <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think I have missed a few emails though because I'd set it up wrong. Working again now <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That does remind me though; I've moved chezred.com but haven't bothered setting up the email accounts yet. I really should do that! <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->
