Scafell Pike

<a href='http://www.scafellpike.org.uk/scafell-pike-routes/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>The Scafell Routes</a>

Putting this here so we can find it and keep track of our achievements!!

So, there's still Scafell in England and Ben Nevis in Scotland to go. Given the success of the Snowdon expedition in September 2014, albeit hard work and a real mental challenge, not to mention the physical challenge, The Reds are up for the climbing of the other 2 peaks in 2015.

Next one is Scafell Pike and I have been doing some research into the routes and associates difficulties of the climb. I've had a good read of the above official website and the decision on route will need to be made at some point. There are 3 options

Borrowdale is the most popular, it's a 10 mile trip and the description doesn't sound too awful.

Wasdale is the easiest (by common consent) at 6.5 miles and seems to be steeper than the others

Great Langdale is the longest at 12 miles and nobody seems to think it's a particularly worthwhile route.

I'm going to buy the 3 peaks walk guidebook which I think has mini-maps in for each peak:

<a href='http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1903 ... d_i=468294' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>National 3 Peaks Walk Book</a>

Partly because it also covers Ben Nevis which we'll need later in the year, but also partly because it's got lots of good information in it.

The website suggests that if you want the best chance at reasonable weather then it's best to pick a date after Easter, I'm wondering if we should do it on a weekday, maybe a Thursday or Friday to reduce traffic and give ourselves recovery time as well. I am aware that I was the only one who really needed recovery time after Snowdon, but at the same time I'm not necessarily ashamed to think I'll need it for Scafell too!

Apparently Scafell is the easiest of the 3 peaks but I don't think that's going to stop me preparing a bit more for it than I did for Snowdon.

Anyone any thoughts?

Sounds like the start of a plan! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I fairly happy to go along with what you'd prefer to do, a Thursday or a Friday sound ok to me - I can't do the first half of May though as I'll be halfway up a mountain in Africa...

Ok, given the events post-your last trip to your brothers, perhaps we should aim for Scafell at the end of April? <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> or we could wait for June?

Ok, Easter is relatively early this year, 3rd-6th April. For our calendar, the week/ends (Thur-Sun) that are free from then are:

16th-19th April

23rd-26th April

21st-24th May

28th-31st May

18th-21st June

ION I am planning to buy Red and I some lightweight water/wind proof jackets from the next Berghaus sample sale because neither one of us has anything like that, my waterproofs are huge and unwieldy although undeniably waterproof!! I am also going to investigate their mountain-climbing range and see if I can find anything that might be useful, compass, whistle, torch etc.

What do you think?

The work holiday situation doesn't look too good for the middle one but, other than that, I should be ok for any of the others.

Ok, I'm going to try for the 28th-31st May weekend as a start point. I need to confirm it with Red's Mum, his work, my work and his Dad, but that's what I'm shooting for! <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Ok, confirming the 29th May as the climb date, if you can get to ours on the 28th anytime you like?

Slight change of plan occasioned by not being able to get anyone to look after the house for a couple of days, we're going to have to go there and back in a day. This isn't great because it's going to be another Snowdon, starting at 6am and driving for 4 hours to get there, but the good news is, it's going to be another Snowdon, but 107m shorter so maybe it won't take as long <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'll plan the same as I did for Snowdon and make sure we've got plenty of food, the climb itself is likely to take about the same length of time as Snowdon so we can expect to be late home again, I'll email Red's Dad today and ask him if he wants to come along as well.

Any objections to planning for Borrowdale up and Seathwaite back? I've ordered that book I was telling you about so I'll have a read of it and let you know if anything changes my mind. Jez does your friend have any experience of Scafell?

Right then, I'm off with the planning, I've taken that week off work and I'm taking the neffys to Mdm Tussauds on the Wednesday, I'll be ready for some adult conversation by the time I see you.

Whoop-Whoop! I've put mine in too, just Red to confirm and we're GO for Scafell <!--emo&:ninja:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/ninja.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ninja.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm approved and the book has arrived!

Interestingly it doesn't show the Borrowdale route, I'm trying to find a map of that at the moment.

What do you think of this? Route is the same length but it's circuitous and contains a pub!
