Last week I picked up a 17" monitor lying by the roadside. This week I picked up an old yellowing keyboard.

Today I picked up a full tower case with 300w psu, no memory, an AMD cpu of unkown type and a 32mb gpu all mounted on a gigbyte 7n400 mobo.

Unfortunately it didn't come with a power lead so I've only been able to try it out with the one I picked up a few weeks ago (from the road) that I use for the monitor. It appears to boot normally (I used 256mb memory that I've liberated from work a month or two ago), it beeps once and I can hear the drives spinning on demand. Hopefully I have myself a new pc for no cost, except for a power lead and mouse maybe. How good is that?

By the Side of the Road?!

All you find on my road is bags of used nappys and maybe a skip full of rubble!

I'd like to know what processor it has but as it ain't broke (I hope) I'm not going to have a look. I did take the hsf off earlier to clean out some dust (or skin depending on how you look at it). Every thing else can wait until I have a power lead for the monitor.

Looks like I'll have to bone-up on RAID too. :D

Soo busy and tired today I didn't even have time to source a power lead.

Awake at 5, cleaning at 6, diving at 8, meeting old friends at 4. It is now almost 11 and I have just got home. Ready for bed me.

At least my afternoon has been relatively amusing. We played 6 games of ten pin bowling and saw some stand up comedy. I lost 5 of the six.

More diving tomorrow and my wetsuit won't be dry. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've woken up to the worst aches and pains this morning, which I lay the blame firmly on the bowling from yesterday afternoon.

My left knee feels like there is ligament or cartilage damage from where I've been turning on it. Knees bend they don't turn.

My back aches and it doesn't feel like I've been to bed.

My shoulder isn't too bad pain wise but to me it seems a little hunched. When I extend my arm and elbow though I can feel pain.

The fingers are the worst part though. I feel like an arthritic paedophile in a sweet shop.

I just hope the diving isn't too physical today.

Still, at least you're doing something fun like diving, rather than having to drag yourself to work!

Diving yes, ever so relaxing when you're in the water.

I weigh 80kg roughly. I carry 12kg of suit/jacket 12kg of weight, 15kg of tank. That is just for me. If I carry the dive flag that includes another 15kg weight and 15m rope.

The dive-site we were at yesterday was 200m from the van with over 70 steps.

It's all worth it though. I just don't think I can do that today with all my aches and pains.

I prefer boat diving. Kit-up, fall-off.

Right I now have a power lead and this is what happens.

After bringing up the win2k screen it reports a missing file and hangs.

I try the second HDD and this one doesn't have an OS

It would seem that this can be repaired with the original disc on startup. Unfortunately I don't have a copy.

The third HDD (also win2k) I have which came from work requires a ctrl, alt, del to logon. As for some reason it is not connected to the network this won't go anywhere.

I'd rather not re-install anything yet as there may be useful or interesting stuff on the drives. Do I have any options suitable for a layperson?

Assuming that is has a CD drive, you could use a live linux CD such as Knoppix to boot from, and use that to see what's on the hard drive.

You should be able to install another OS alongside the existing one without erasing any files - although if it's NTFS formatted (which it probably will be), you won't have any luck with 95/98. If you have an XP disc, just use that to install a temp copy on the drive - just don't try to activate it!

I'm going to start thinking aloud, please correct me or point me in the direction as necessary. Thanks.

The only OS I currently have is an XP OEM recovery for the laptop. When inserted in the drive of the desktop it politely reminds me that it isn't a Toshiba.

The desktop was trying to boot from the 5gb hdd and the second is a 160gb. From this I imagine the 5gb was solely for the OS and so if I overwrite it I probably wouldn't lose much.

These live CDs for Linux, I'm right in thinking I can run an OS from the CD-ROM drive, and with the OS running I'd be able to look around the HDDs. If I did this I would probably then be able to find the relevant CDkeys for the win2k installation and use these for a fresh install. Or may even be able to replace the files I'm told are corrupt.

Well it was very silly for someone to leave an almost fully working pc on the side of the road.
