You remember correctly - exactly that game by the sounds of it, but there has been an open source openGL project to bring it up to date. The new graphics look very much less blocky. The difference is fabulously slick actually!

I've got it working again. I recon I can get a fool-proof installer down to 350MB which should get it working on any 1GHz+ machine with OpenGL support - that's probably pretty much anything anyone is actually still using except me <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' />

My old machine will run the old Descent perfectly fine, but it needs a boot disk and all kinds of crap. It'll also run Quake 2 no problem but that's the chunky graphics version so I think I'm down to just 3 good machines. Should be more than enough though, especially if KW brings his Laptop which totally owns all my boxes. Not as much as his dual processor (or is it four cores now?) work station and 22" monitor but I don't think theres any need for that <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' />

Descent - I used to have that on my PS1. I completely sucked at it ten years ago, and I doubt the passage of time has improved my skills any! <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /> This could be fun.

15" usable spare CRT monitor - might be an idea to drop your screen resolution down before you bring the box - it doesn't go higher than 1024x768 and that needs a bit of tweaking <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' />

Notice the crisps. It was decided that Sweet Chilli Sensations were the greatest crisps on earth, so I purchased two packets for the party. Of course; being a silly boy I forgot to actually open them...

Apologies for the curry - which kinda turned into Pie and Chips due to unpreparedness and lazyness; but pie is good and to be honest I was too drunk to really care that much what it was like. I think it was OK though!

Further apologies for sleeping through the whole of Sunday. Breakfast was supposed to be a regular fry-up with toast and coffee ; but we kinda had breakfast for lunch with the fried bacon I guess. The timing was a bit last minute for that too; but those who know me would not be surprised!

Hopefully it won't take 3 years to arrange the next one, but we'll see what happens. Thank you everyone very much for coming; it was fun!

Thanks again for the party, a great time was had! Even though there was slightly less LAN and slightly more party than maybe was originally planned....

JJ, has your lappy started talking to your network again yet?

The trip home was fine, although I did get stuck behind an enourmous truck all the way from Weedon to Southam. 40/50mph along roads that I would normally drive along at 80. I got home at 4 and promptly fell asleep for 5 hours.

Yes; sorry about the Quake. Now I've realised you can run it in console mode I might set one up more permanently. It's on now actually if anyone wants to try <img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' />

I really will get the Descent working too... honest! I'm not totally sure; but it looks like Q3 is now open-source? I need to do a bit of looking into stuff...

As to Lappy - not turned it on today. I'll have a look tomorrow; sure it'll sort itself out!
