Dag Nab it I have to come up with yet another cooling solution...

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... eedFan.png' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

That's my latest effort running at 65C and dropping to nearer 55C when I take the lid off. That's with no loading.

CPU isn't the worst bit - that just causes the whole machine to reset when it hits about 69 dude. Worst thing is the hard disk. It starts miss-firing at 55C and the manufacturer says it should die <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think its time for a whole new case, but I LIKE this one... apart from the crapness, it looks nice!

More Techno-Flailings <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

1. My 2001 vintage 40GB IBM Deskstar (AKA Deathstar) finally died. I thought it was the USB adapter I'd just bought for about ?4 which was crappy, but it would seem to be the drive electronics failing slowly and now... failed.

Ironically, I was trying to recover some stuff off it ready for a reformat. I'm thinking of upgrading my K6 to XP lite and needed a drive to try it on...

2. I just put in an old 13GB drive which had Windows '98 on it... AND IT REFLASHED MY VIDEO BIOS!!!!

I now know how my last card died, because exactly the same thing happened. Only the right had side of the screen works in 800x600, although 640x480 16colour does work. Higher modes don't work at all. last time I thought it meant the video ram was stuffed and I blamed it on the cat - she'd been sitting on it and she's made of static and scratch.

Luckily, unlike my Riva TNT this old Asus GeForce2 card seems to have recovered with a couple of reboots.

I now need to delete the line in the Autoexec that says "DO NOT DELETE THIS LINE it flashes the video bios to a '98 compatible version" - I do NOT want to make this mistake again!!!! <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Back to temperatures. I made a mod to this PC I'm using; I added a 120mm fan. Here's the beauty of it in full colour:

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... FanMod.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Temperatures before:

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... edFan2.png' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

and after:

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... nAfter.png' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Note the hard disk is now nice and chilly. Even with no lid on, it was running too hot for my liking.

Ain't gonna happen again... reformatting in NTFS as I type. Windows '98 is GONE <!--emo&:rant:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/angry1.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='angry1.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think I might have a problem.... Oh well.

I think it might have something to do with this:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... CF0524.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Yep, although I have a nice big case fan, it blows straight onto a bit of wood!

Can anyone say 'impeded airflow'? <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

However, it's been like that for about a year now with no real problems, so the chances of me ever doing anything about it now are roughly zero - and dropping fast! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

BTW JJ, if you ever get nostalgic, I can lend you my copy of W98 - or, if you want, W95 OSR1!

I might even still have WFW around somewhere.... <!--emo&:rofl:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/rofl.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rofl.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've got Windows 2.01 so I win <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

OK I've just installed XP UWI on my old K6 450 machine, and it is awsome - only used about 90MB and boots so much faster than W2K; though it is a fresh install.

Then I connected it to the network and it all went wrong <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Memory use through the roof, up from 17 to 35 processes running. Hammered the processor, and fell over dead.

Reboot with no network: all nice again.

This install is one I *ahem* borrowed from a chap in India for the purpose of evaluation (you can't bloody buy it in the shops so what am I supposed to do!) - so I investigate the running processes and find:

VistaDrive.exe

here's a quote:

This is Win32 Mailer Gen. EXPLOIT

Now there's a surprise, bless those spam bots - gotta love 'em <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Isn't it nice to have a Windows install pre-installed with viruses? I'm surprised MS haven't thought of that yet....

Well I bought an Arctic Cooler for about ?4 - they've got hardly any left, and it's so good I wish I'd bought the lot! Temp dropped to 30* with no lid, from nearly 60* with the stock cooler <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Also finally completed the mod and screwed the lid back on. Don't do this at home children...

Fit fan to case lid. Not the ideal place, but I needed it directly over the PSU. You'll see why later...

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... Circle.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... eDrill.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... TheSaw.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... heFile.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... TheFan.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Now look in da box. The 80mm PSU fan was failing, making a bad noise. It's easy enough to replace but I wanted to keep it quiet. The new 120mm fan is directly over it, so I just took the lid off. I recon it will run cooler than ever... I hope!

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... PSUmod.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Finally put it together and test:

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... Result.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/ ... igures.png' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Result!

No, eBuyer 55p

You sent me the water block which I can't get to fit on anything <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Too many damned sticky-up bits on the motherboards!

I made a bit of a mess - I managed to scratch the paint when I cut the hole, and the grill doesn't quite cover it properly. Grill only arrived today; cut hole on the weekend...

There it all is put together. I used to have a glowy blue mouse and an old IBM keyboard; but I've just bought a new Microsft jobby. Hopefully it'll be more reliable. Tell you one thing - the keyboard is almost silent! Mouse wheel sounds like a ratchet from hell though!

From left to right, that's the PC under the turntable. Not a good place for it because of the vibrations and the heat flow; but it's why I bought the darn case - it fits well.

On the right is my USB cup warmer with bluetooth dongle, my crappy mobile and my Nano-ish mp3 player which is playing up.

Behind are lots of cassette tapes (go Google it if you don't remember them!) and the 8" Maplin 30Watt speakers in DIY cabs. They're running directly off the soundcard at the mo - I hope to have the amp reconnected next job...

LOL yeah, it wasn't there for the original shot because I was drinking it - you can see it on the screen kinda. I didn't like the bin being in shot so I moved it, but left the glass there instead <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->
