I was quite happy with my Mondeo. It may be boring, but it went where I pointed it and the turbo-diesel got me there fast enough. It didn't have enough storage for me in the front, and it would have been nice to have rear electric windows. Seriously - that's the worst thing I can say about it except it was a Mondeo and it was a bit boring!

Well now I've got a Vectra.

It has even less storage in the front. I can't even fit an A/Z in the glove box FFS!

I can't see out the back anything below about 5 feet high.

The suspension is made from F*cking Jelly!

The winker control stick thingy is made from Jelly! Seriously - it's flippin me out.

The radio is shit.

There's no mileage computer.

The Cruise Control only goes down and not up.

It has really uncomfortable seats which I slide around in and they stick in your back.

It doesn't quite go where you point it; only nearly.

And that f*cking suspension means the back end slides all over the place if you push it round corners...

On the plus side - it's quite fast! The turbo on the Mondeo was totally invisible. This one is much more like the old days with a real kick up the backside when it decides to join you! Combined with the shitty suspension and under-steer it makes for quite a wild ride, which I'm actually starting to enjoy in some perverse way!

I still want my Primera back though. At least it had Alloy wheels and a CD auto-changer

I'm practically going to be living in my car now I'm the only engineer left in the company, so stupid things like the my Mondeo had a cup holder and somewhere to plug my MP3 player and phone in will really be missed

The indicators are designed that way by all acounts, and the lack of storage is something that can only be fixed with chain-saw

The decent radio and the milage computers are simply options I don't have, and I imagine there's probably various options for the seats.

In other words - if I'd paid about ?1000 more then I'd have got a better version...

I had a test drive on an s-plate vectra a few years ago, with a view to replacing my much-loved, but pretty worn Cavalier CDi. I had great expectations...

....but it was rubbish!

It was a 2 litre model (same as the cav), but was completely gutless. The thing felt like a barge, it seemed about twice the size of the cavalier, despite being the same size. It also steered like an oil tanker, but with more body roll.

I kept the Cavalier for a bit longer!

If I were to make a car up from the best bits of the cars I've had in the past, it would have:

*Engine from my Saab 9000 (2 litre 16v turbo. Nice! )

*Suspension from my Mk 1 Astra GTE - just the right balance between sharp and comfortable (the spax shocks I put on probably helped)

*Gearbox from my Datsun Skyline (smoother than a really smooth thing wrapped in silk and smothered in butter. Also fantastic for racing changes!)

*Seats from my TR7 - Despite (or because of? ) the stuffing coming out of them, these are the most comfortable car seats I've ever had - 2000 miles in a weekend, and I got out feeling like I'd just been down the shops!

*Roadholding from my TR7 - this car goes exactly where you put it. Period.

*Gadgets from my Saab - this was a top of the range CDi, and had everything. It took me about a year to find out what all the buttons did!

*Boot space from my Saab - I could live in there. It was huge!

*Reliability of my (current) Mk 3 Astra - I bought this for ?400, with a view to running it for a few months before it died. Three years later, it's still going strong - the thing is indestructible!

Although I do realise that would make a pretty strange looking car!

I drove a 1.6 Astra as a loan car for a couple of days. I was really impressed with its driveability, and if it wasn't for the really bad advert with all the crying babies I might have bought one

It sounds like I'm moaning about the Vectra - well I guess I am; but don't get me wrong because it's still better than my old Fiesta Van. It has more seats for starters

And I know I'm a lucky B*stard really 'cause it's mine free except for the ?450 odd in tax. It's just really annoying to loose all the nice things I had in the old one which had only done 60K. It's ironic but it works out cheaper for them to change the car while it's still low mileage because of the resale value
