Over the last couple of days I have received 7 individual spams from random people around the world. They have been inviting me to look at an e-card they made just for me.

Now if I in less than 60 seconds can find out that it invites you to download a Storm trojan then why the hell can't these people do the same. Fecking idiots, but what it means now is my gmail address has been found. At least gmail is filtering them all out easily enough.

What's quite amusing is that some of them have come from employees within large companies. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

http://www.srei.com - French construction company

http://www.emersonenergy.com - Worldwide energy company

http://www.marykay.com - American cosmetic company

http://www.restaurantatenea.com - Spanish hotel/restaurant chain, nice looking menu *drools*

http://www2.desotoisd.org/ - Texan school community

http://www.true.com/default.htm - Dating site

http://det.wa.edu.au - Western Australian department of education

Now should I complain to them. Perhaps even invoice them for my time?

It's not their fault - their addresses have been harvested from the Internet or from infected people's address books. If you get a spamming virus, it uses your PC to send emails using random names generated from the content of your address book.

I could use your email address to send spam. There is nothing you could do to stop me except use a secret email address. A secret email address isn't much good, especially to a large company!

SMTP email has absolutely no security. When you send an email, your address is in the header. Basically you say "HELO I'm Matt" and the recipient has no way of knowing if it's true or not.

http://www.answers.com/topic/simple-mail-transfer-protocol

If you run your own SMTP server or use an "Open Relay" then all you do is set up a fake account in Outlook Express to use that instead of your ISP's smtp server. You can get free SMTP server software, or most viruses have one coded into them. It's an extremely simple piece of coding.

I'm not going to go into the ins and outs as I believe you. Somehow I was just hoping that if I send something it can only be from me. It can't be that hard, can it?

Is there a secure kind of mail that I should be using? <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yes there is but no one else uses it so it's pointless - you'd never receive any email if you only accepted secure email!

MX records are the most basic check. The IP address of the SMTP server is registered against your domain name to prove that it is a legitimate one. A lot of spam filters work by rejecting mail with a bad MX record but it isn't a guarantee.

Microsoft tried very hard to introduce a pretty good method, but they got booooed off stage.

You can also digitally sign your email - that really does prove it was from you. Like I say, no one signs their mail though so it's only any good if you're in some kind of elite and geeky criminal underground!

http://www.verisign.com.au/authentication/messaging/

Even Outlook Express supports Verisign and other free digital signatures. Look in Tools / Options / Security.

So I hear about the whole world complaining about spam, but not the ways to circumvent it. As supposedly 40% of all emails are spam I find that quite odd. I understand you saying that things won't get through to a secret email address, but then again there will always be some muppet who gets included who doesn't have a clue.

If I get included on a multiple To: list when it isn't a group thing I will sometimes reply to all asking that they please use a Bcc: instead, at least that doesn't spread emails around if some retard gets infected. <!--emo&:rant:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/angry1.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='angry1.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yep - I always try to do that. If you look back at the Party invite you'll see I did just that!

At least I hope I did - sometimes make mistakes <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

These "add your email to the list and pass it on to show your support" spams are one of the most stupid spam harvesting tools ever, and I've had loads mostly from the same woman <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I sent it on 04 July 2007 14:50 to your redeyesuk gmail address. Maybe it ended up in the Spam; how ironic <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You don't know her actually - woman I used to work with; I somehow ended up on her random funny stuff daily spam list!

Actually I used to get that from a couple of people but it stopped now. Maybe that's all in my spam bin too <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I just got 10 spam emails from random people at yourwired.net so some buggers doing it to me!

Aaaarghhh!

This probably means for the next week I am going to get hundreds of thousands of emails bouncing back to me even though I never sent them! My phone went mental - it's sending them 10 at a time... Hmm... 20:30 I wonder when the next ten go out <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

OMJG! I just checked my spam box. Those 10 that got through were just the tip of the iceberg!

It started at 20:12 and I've been receiving 30 - 40 bounces A MINUTE !!!!!!

And that's just the ones that bounced. I imagine many thousands didn't. I hate this kind of spam because it means that 1000's of people are blaming Me for being spammed; when actually it's some bloody Russian or something.

Need to trace IP addresses...

Great - just had some more, one from Yahoo! groups thanking me for signing up to "the flyham group hosted by Yahoo! Groups, a free, easy-to-use community service." <!--emo&:rant:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/angry1.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='angry1.gif' /><!--endemo-->
