Anyone know any good freeware software for converting AVI files to DVD output?

I have a episode of Battlestar Galactica as an AVI file that I want to burn to DVD to watch on the tv.

I've tried Avi2DVD but it seems to crash every time, and WinMPG also crashes when I try it.

Deja Vu.

I asked the same thing not long ago. However I can't remember which thread, I'll have a peak and see what I can find. Otherwise JJ or Adam will be able to help as they did last time.

There are plenty more fish in the sea, get your tackle out and see what bites.

I think there is a thread somewhere so I'll search for that in a moment, but I've just got the same trouble again.

The annoying thing at the moment is that I have tried Nero and it transcodes the video, which you can see happening as it is processed, but the mp4 output file isn't recognised by anything other than the Nero player. When you force it to play in MP or by changing the file extension you only get the audio.

Also you can't get it to automatically fit the files to disc and there are many ways of doing the same thing. This is supposed to be a premium application.

Well it is looking like I should be able to rename the mp4 files to mpg and get them to fit onto a CD, it's just bloody long winded.

Are you sure it's crashing?

Remember it could take several days to finish encoding if you don't have a powerful machine.

The quote is from May, I think Rob may have waited several months. <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

There's loads of software out there, and loads of guides:

http://www.videohelp.com/author#3;6

Thing is, I just don't use DVD any more except as a format to buy. The whole point of a media centre is that I don't need to waste hours of my time encoding and burning DVDs. I just play the files. I'm far more likely to want to rip a DVD into Xvid, much like people rip their CDs into mp3 and never play the CD again.

In the past I've used the full version of Nero and also the software that came with my DVD burner, but it was many years ago on Windows '98. It just worked, although it took literally about 2 days to finish on my old 586.

You can buy a DivX compatible DVD player for about ?15 now. That's less than a legal copy of DVD Creater would cost. Most DVD recorders will play DivX and even they're less than ?50 now.

I know, I know. The trouble is that this isn't for me, it's at my parent's.

I'm gonna give up after this last attempt.

Promise. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->
