This 7.2v drill was shite when it was new. The battery pack is now totally dead, so I did a little mod:

So if I'm correct you are running a 7.2v drill directly off a 12v battery without any further modifications?

Now 20 years ago I was into radio controlled cars in a big way and bizarre random mods followed soon afterwards.

I started off with a Hornet.

<img src='http://www2.gpmd.com/image/t/tamc0346.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

which was soon followed by the Lunchbox.

<img src='http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/ta ... 57_350.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

After I then got the Thundershot. I was able to use the Hornet and Lunchbox for my modz.

<img src='http://www.modelsport.co.uk/_images/pro ... /58361.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Now from memory the mods went as:

I used the rear wheels from the hornet on the lunchbox. The massive drop in radius had a similar effect on top speed but drastically increased acceleration.

Standard motor at 14,000 rpm was upgraded to a Gold model producing 25,000 @ 7.2v.

The next mod was to replace the 7.2v battery pack with an 8.4v model.

After all these were completed just a flick of acceleration meant the car pulled a wheelie and started scraping the bodywork. I had to quickly devise a new mod and screwed a couple of lego wheels onto the bodywork to prevent damage. Seeing this scale van pulling a wheelie for 100+yargs still brings happy memories to me today.

I ought to get back into the modelling, specifically the nitro stuff.

Ah! I used to create alsort back in my lego days.

I once built a machine to clean the tops of my shelves out of a paint roller, a fan and a plastic bag.

IT WAS AWSOME!.........even if it did break after the 1st few uses due to burning out the 3v motor by using every single AA battire I could find in my house. Think there was 10-15 one there. Went like the clappers.

Also once made a washing machine out of a microwave. Figure that one out.

Big_Adam aka Mr. Dyson <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

My very first electrical mod would have been at middle school. We were learning about electrical circuits and after learning about heat and resistance, I connected up as many D cells into a line as possible and used a hot wire to chop the end off of an atlas. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The only time I've seen the teacher more angry was when someone (else) tried igniting about 5m of magnesium ribbon with a magnifying glass. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Magnesium wins!

But wire wool is surprisingly fun too - try sticking 240 volts across a whole bag of it <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

To my shame, electricity is always something I struggle to understand. Volts, watts etc .

The most important thing to remember is that more is better.

I attempted a little mod the other day.

I had a little set of LED lights for my car, just perfect for interior lighting. They were rubbish, frankly, and connected via a lighter socket, which promptly broke. So I decided to wire them a bit more permanently to the interior light circuit.

If I'd remembered my school technology lessons a bit better, I'd have remembered that LEDs usually need a resistor in the circuit. <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

LEDs smell bad when they blow! <!--emo&:&#036;--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/blush.jpg' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blush.jpg' /><!--endemo-->

There was also a thread of mine here about LEDs for a case mod and I'm sure JJ said you need a resistor.

Bit of a moot point now the case is still in Oz. Shame really I was enjoying what I was doing there.

I know the smell only too well...

I was looking at the prices at Rapid Electronics - it's a shame I can't be arsed to do lots of cool stuff any more, because their LEDs are a fraction the price of Maplins or anywhere; like superbright white LEDs for a few pence rather than pounds... but when you only want 10 of them the postage is a killer!
