A couple of friends I don't often see these days will probably be going to the Northampton Beer Festival on 29th May.

http://www.camra.org.uk/event.aspx?o=236893

This also happens to be the date for Eurovision, for which I traditionally have a bit of a party.

Do people think it might be possible or even desirable to do both? The festival will mostly be a daytime thing, and Eurovision shouldn't get under full swing until later. It's probably (definately) best watched while under the affluence of ilcahol, so perhaps it's all for the best?

If we do do both, dinner will have to be very much a buffet affair with instant ovenable junk like sausage rolls and pizza, with plenty of nibbles.

Any thoughts?

Sounds good, although I forgot to check the calendar last evening. Not sure if there's anything else on but a Beer festival sounds right up our street. I presume it'll be too far to taxi, is there a decent bus service or will we require a designated driver?

I'll try to remember to look at the calendar this evening, but the Eurovision evening sounds ace as well, I remember it being fun last year, up to the point where I fell asleep anyway

I'm still in London town at that point, so once again I'm going to have to bow out of this one.

My plan would be to leave cars at my house and take the bus. If we miss the last bus, it's only about ?15 in a taxi which is OK shared between a few people.

Would people be up for the Eurovision party afterwards?

LOL Jon, just realised that yes - you posted on x404 about that. Sorry

Fair enough. I finally remembered (courtesy of a little reminder from Red) to check the calendar, looks like we're all free to join you on the Saturday, let us know logistics, what time you want us at yours etc etc.

We won't be able to stay too late on the Sunday though, we have big plans for getting Rosie turned around that weekend and we'll be taking advantage of the bank holiday Monday to get that finished and start stripping out the front end

Yay!! Beer and Eurovision, what could be better??

Would be good to get a beer from every country and drink it when their group is performing.

The Plan!

Hopefully Matt & Lampy will arrive Friday night, and we'll do our RP stuff and drink beer. They'll stay over and join us on the Saturday, if they come.

I hope to catch the 2:30pm bus to the beer festival. I'm not planning on doing anything special to eat before we go, so basically it's a case of dumping cars at my house and jumping on the bus. They're not exactly frequent and they don't wait, so if we miss it then it's either 3:30pm or a taxi.

It'll take about 45 minutes to get there, where we should find beer and "country wine". It's free entry before 7pm, but I doubt the drinks will be that cheap. For maximum tasting, I suggest lots of sharing!

I'd like to head back quite early to get things ready for Eurovision. People can come with or catch a later bus, but it's not that big an event so I imagine we'll have seen it all in a few hours.

I've ordered pizza and other junk food to be delivered on Friday so we should not starve. The Pink Suit is reserved for the Reds, so any one else sleeping over gets to fight over the blue room or the sofas.

Red and I were looking at the list of beers last night and have decided to drink our way through the beers with the silliest names first. There are quite a few so we're going to implement the sharing idea so we're not on our knees before the Eurivision even starts!!

Sounds like a good plan, we'll aim to be there by 2pm with the usual drinks cabinet and party-tude. Looking forward to it

Well, I was happy with the results. I thought Lena looked and sounded very cute, and her entry was very contemporary. I think she deserved to win. After all, she even painted her toenails for us.

The beer festival went better than I had expected. The rain held off except for one brief downpour, but the ground wasn't too soggy and the tent was dry inside. I must have tasted a dozen different beers, some of which were pretty good. The country wine was interesting, although it was a shame they didn't give any clue as to the ingredients. I'd like to make the nettle wine so I'll be doing a little research.

I hope everyone had fun. I'm now going to sleep for a couple of days

Yep, we had fun. We shall have to do that again sometime.

We've been busy all day, fortunately neither of us are the worse for wear!

The rolls were nice BTW, we had them toasted with cheese. Nom nom nom.

Oh that was a lot of fun. I will blog properly but suffice to say the voting annoyed me (as usual) and I don't (personally) think the best song won, but that's subjective so *meh* Otherwise the day was brilliant, it was nice to get to know Matt and Lampy better, good guys both I reckon. The beer festival rocked and I tasted a couple of beers that were nice enough I'd like to try and track them down if I can.

The food was excellent, although there was too much for me in the end and I also stopped drinking once we got home, all of which contributed to a general feeling of wellness when I woke up this morning, even though it was to a phantom opening the door to the room we were in, and was also too early.

Thanks go to JJ as ever for fantastic hosting duties and I'm only sorry we couldn't hang out this morning for longer. Still, Horace got his new windscreen and is all legal again, so it's not all bad.

I has phantoms

That door has been known to pop open of it's own accord, and as I've just thought to check the window was open so maybe it was the strong wind.

Either that, or Matt forgot where he was sleeping and nearly joined you

Glad to hear you made it home safely and that Horace is feeling better now. We should try and remember to keep an eye out for the next festival. I've just checked my commemorative glass, and the last one I have was Olympia 2000. Ten years between festivals seems like a rather long time!

I'm fairly sure Matt had one from 2005 and my Berlin one was 2009 I think. I reckon it's annually Next time there's a real ale festival in Stratford you'll have to come to ours, the 'Spoons here really gets into the spirit of the thing (no pun intended)
