How many salad eaters are there going to be?

I'm going to try and do the shopping tomorrow or Thursday lunch time. I'm also slightly concerned that some things like cut lettuce really wont keep fresh until Sunday if I make them on Saturday, so I may need to bring ingredients to put in the fridge and use your kitchen on Sunday morning.

So far I have on the "idea list":

Waldorf salad

Egg and Potato salad with bits in, as per my recent thread

Red onion salad - a bit like you get at an Indian

Chinese Coleslaw

That Italian style tomato and cheese thing with olive oil I can never remember the name of

Fresh green bean salad, depending on the available crop on Saturday morning!

Birthday Pudding Cake - I have no idea, but I'm absolutely positive it will be divine <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The hole for the Hangi is now dug <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<a href='http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... C00399.jpg' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'><img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... C00399.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'></a>

I now have calluses, aching muscles and a new-found respect for sextons (well, the old-fashioned ones anyway - I think they all use mini-diggers now <!--emo&:rolleyes:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo--> ); that was bloody hard work! The ground out there is brick hard clay. I think I also lost about a litre of fluids just from sweating - which reminds me, I need to take a shower! <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It might possibly be too small - I won't really know until I get the pig on Friday. If it is, it won't take long to extend the pit.

Preparations are well underway: Bertie the pig has been ordered and is due to be slaughtered tomorrow - the butcher wants me to go in on Friday and discuss with him how I want it prepared. That'll be fun, as apart from 'cut off all the icky bits we don't want to eat', I really have no idea how it needs to be prepared. I guess I'll have to do a bit of research there.

Apart from piggy (I keep singing the NIN song 'Piggy (Nothing can stop me now)' in my head whenever I think of him <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), I've ordered some 'exotic' burgers - a selection of:
  • Impala
  • Kangaroo
  • Kudu
  • Ostrich
  • Springbok
  • Venison
  • Wild Boar & Apple
  • Wildebeest
  • Zebra
<!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As well as a few fancy vegetarian sausages for those that fancy them (mainly for my mum, who is a vegetablist for some weird reason <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), plus of course some 'normal' burgers and sausages for the less adventurous.

Rocks for the Hangi will be here on Thursday, I've got some firewood already but I'm going to get more tomorrow, I think we've now got everything we need sorted out.

I don't think anyone will be going hungry this weekend; in fact I can see pork sandwiches in my future! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

No, I meant The McCallums affectionately known in the family as the Macs. My Auntie Judy and Uncle Dave. Jenny is their daughter and Joe is her boyfriend.

I was up late, unintentionally but that seems to be the way things are going recently, I get maybe 1 or 2 early nights during the week, the rest of the time the evening gets away from me....like last evening <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I didn't actually "rise" to Bratty baiting, just gently prodded a bit <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Do you have bowls? I don't really have anything pretty, but I have ones that will do. Otherwise it'll be out of Tupperware which is fine by me but not sure if you're trying to make an impression?

Excellent track <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Kudu
I'd never herd of Kudu but looks tasty!

Rocks
I keep pondering the specific heat capacity of granite, and wondering if you might not need to light the fire on Friday to get the process started? At the very least, I suspect you'll need to be up at the crack of dawn <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

With that many kinds of meat, I'm not sure anyone is even going to be able to try them all! I'm looking forward to things I've never eaten before, and of course finally meating Bertie in the flesh <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Right, after 7 hours of slicing and dicing I've finally finished preparing the salads. I think the vegetablists should be fine <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just need to have a bath, pick some beans, pack the car and I'm off. Should be there by 6pm at the very latest; see you then!

OMG that was the best fun wkend. We were chatting in bed when Red came up (at nearly 5am) about how much fun we'd had just planning and carrying out the putting down of the hangi, even if it hadn't worked so flawlessly (well, once the fire was lit anyway) we'd still have really enjoyed the event.

We have plans for another BBQ next weekend to eat some of the leftover burgers and etc from today but in all honesty it was just brilliant. We tidied up the garden apart from the gazebo after everyone had left and just as we finished clearing up the hangi pit it started to rain so we came inside. It rained properly then and we were so glad that the rest of the day had been good-ish on the weather front.

I've been so spoilt, thank you both so much for your contributions and for taking active part, it wouldn't have been the same without you.

Love you guys!! xxx

There was never any danger that the fire wasn't going to start - it just took a little longer because of the damp. I'm pretty sure me and Mr Red could start a fire in a swamp pit if we had to <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

In the end, the meat really was flawless. Shame on me for ever doubting! As KW says - not a meal we're likely to forget!

I can't help thinking that the pit could be extended to man-sized and used for (no, not that!) working under the car.

Well, the pit has now been filled in:

<a href='http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... C00402.jpg' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'><img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... C00402.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'></a>

You'd never know there was anything there <!--emo&:whistle:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/eusa_whistle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='eusa_whistle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Shouldn't take long to dig out again though for next time (and yes - there will be a next time <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

All in all, it was a great success, but there's room for improvement:

*The fire was a PITA to get started, mainly due to access and airflow. Either we need to dig a ventilation channel on the side (a lot of work <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), or we can build the fire on top of the pit, so it collapses into it once the bottom logs burn through (although there's a chance of us getting hit with hot embers/rocks when it collapses <!--emo&:huh:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/huh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='huh.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

*The hessian sacks didn't work too well - apart from the near collapsage when we pulled the pig out, all the lovely crackling got itself welded to the hessian. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> Some investigation needed there I think.
