Thanks KindaWobbly, those two links will be getting some use from me tonight.

Until the missus gets home anyway.

I'm now just downloading an iso for knoppix, luckily I was able to find loads of related stuff on my ISPs mirror so it won't count towards my monthly usage. It's also uber quick.

I was also able to print off a copy of the mobo manual at work earlier.

In fact the only thing I've contributed to this project myself is a bit of time (probably become lots), the CD I'll burn the iso onto and some electrickery.

I've tried two iso CDs now and there is a drive boot failure for each. When the CD drive fails it reverts to the HDD and gives me the errors I'd received earlier.

This would suggest to me that the CD drive may not be configured properly, but as it complained when I tried to use the laptop recovery CD this may not be a problem after all.

I've never done anything like this before, so please don't assume that I've tried what to you guys may be basic tasks.

Hmm, let me see.....

How are you burning the CDs?

As it's an ISO image, you'll need to burn the CD from the image, rather than copying the file onto the disc. Your burning software should have an option to do this somewhere.

If not, it might also be that the CD drive is knackered - try swapping the drive out from your other PC (don't be scared, it's easy! :D ) and see if that boots.

Another thing to try would be to set your CMOS back to factory settings, just in case there's something in there upsetting things (doubtful, but you never know). You can do this either by going into the CMOS setup, or by using the motherboard jumper switch (it'll be in that nice shiny new manual you downloaded).

And to keep this thread properly silly, here's a random picture of a stapler:

Ok, that sort of makes sense about the iso image. I think I had been just copying the file over as there weren't any other obvious options to choose from.

Having just had a good poke around the software I'm using I've found an option that says it can make a bootable disc, but in order to do this it asks by default for an .img file rather than the .iso. If I select the this option then it initially puts 1.74mb of file on the disc before I actually select the 700mb .iso.

Is this sounding right?

No...

There should be an option to actually Open the iso file into the burning software. Which program are you using? I use Nero but there are some good free ones I know of...

I'm using a thing called Drag n Drop CD DVD, it's not as good as the nero I remember from a few years back.

I use Nero too, so it's difficult to make a recommendation. You could try the free version of this - it seems to offer the ability to burn an ISO image.

Try using this:

CDBurner XP

Well worth the ?0.00 (which works out at roughly $0.00AUD at current exchange rates) it costs, you can burn ISO's with that. At least, that's what I used for my last linux ISO.

SHE RIDES

The knoppix live cd is working fine and I've been able to have a poke around the couple of HDDs that came with the case.

The 4gb drive is stuffed with win2k and very little else.

The 160gb is only 7% full, and of that 8gb is porn, mainly Hentai.

It looks like he was a fan of Billy Joel too.

It looks like it belonged to someone called Jerome, and it appears that he may have been a financial advisor.

I don't think there is much point in keeping most of the junk there so I now need to think about configuring the system.

The linux doesn't look to bad at all. Just different, and although that makes it a little fiddly to start with I think I may keep at it. Especially if things are a little more secure.

You may just see me in other fora soon.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm sure it will be just the tip of the iceberg.

A 160GB hard disk and it was just out on the streets   :o

This PC has an 80GB drive and my other 2 main ones only have 40GB in them!

I have a 200GB drive in this with most of my Anime on, and a 160GB external drive with most of the rest of the Anime...

I'm just about to order more disk space. It's been weeks since my 120GB Pr0n drive failed... and I want my pr0n back! I was going to do a raid 5 array... but it's a bit pricy... I might just get a USB drive; how lazy is that!

I am going to do a software mirror using the two 40GB drives... but I'm not sure if my 450MHz K6-2 is really upto the job!
