Ooh, dates and stuff!

I mean, when and where... although stuffed dates are good eating too, and probably fit the theme <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hows about Imbolc? It's on a Monday by my calender, so I guess Saturday 6th February would be first suitable day following.

Next question; where? Badger Central is most convenient for me and KW due to the being here already, and having plenty of spare room - especially if we can muster a few more troops this time <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Last question; what can I bring to the table? I like the idea of goat and sheep cheese, which would be seasonal and might fit in with the theme. If weather permits, I could spit-roast lamb kebab over the BBQ although the oven seems more likely. Not sure if that fits though, and it's too early for lambs really. I do like fires though <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'll let you guys do the deciding. I'll see if I can get The Bangles to come <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I don't think there's anything going on at this end, so I reckon the 6th should be fine, unless Mrs R knows any different? <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Badger Central is probably best - as you well know, Chez Red is too small for any more than three people, and even that's a little cozy.

Lamb kebab and/or kofta would totally work - we were considering doing that ourselves, but didn't think we could pull it off without a BBQ (or ideally, an elephant leg <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). If you want to have a go at that, you won't get any complaints from me. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Fire will very much depend on the weather. For the lamb I have two options:

1. Mince

This would make either doner kebab or kofta

2. Joint

This would make shish kebab, or I could simply roast it in the oven.

Either way, I'll need to look up some sauces. I'd usually do a chilli sauce and garlic yoghurt, but that's Greek / Turkish. Was it similar over there, or are we going with the "Om nom tasty" principle of authentic? <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I might make some yoghurt flat-breads too, and a bit of salad just to pretend to be healthy.

You know, if you can do Falafel (which I've always failed at big-style) then not only will I be very impressed indeed, but I can invite the vegetarians. They can have mushroom kebab instead of the lamb <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yep, 6th should be fine and tbh any way you want to cook baa-lamb will likely be fine with us. Kofta doesn't really have a sauce but if you want to do something authentic then we encountered a thick and spicy tomato sauce with a number of our meat-based meals, I'll have a think about the flavour and texture and get back to you if you want?

Falafel should be fine, the only question is cooking it without a deep fat fryer, but I think Red has a method in mind. I'm thinking about adding cold rice pudding - Egypt-style to the dessert selection, I'm not even going to attempt to make balaclava again, the pastry is just too fiddly and there's no significant improvement in taste so I shall buy one (if I can find it) and hope peoples teeth don't explode.

I'm hoping we can prep as much as possible beforehand to cut down on the kitchen time, partly to enjoy the party, but partly to make sure I can take part in the shisha smoking <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just one week of work to go now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Cirrus may join us subject to being back in Cambridge for Sunday morning, and I'll pop an email off to Nav tonight so there could be from four to six of us in total.

Regarding food, I've still not decided what to do exactly. I think it will just depend what looks good and fresh in store on the day. I'll do some dips, nibbles, flat-breads, cheese, warm salads and something sheep based. Obviously there will be items from all the main food groups; Wine, Whisky and Rum <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Any suggestions or recipes for suitable tasty sauces are very welcome!

See y'all soon <!--emo&:fish:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/laughing-fish.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laughing-fish.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well, we'll be bringing:

Tahina (dipping sauce, to be eaten with pitta & falafel)

Pitta bread

Falafel

Koshary

Chicken shawerma

Roz bi Laban (Egyptian Rice Pudding)

Baklava

So anything to go around that would be ideal. Also, a basic (lettuce/tomato/cucumber) salad would be great.

Although I think that's plenty already! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Also, shisha <!--emo&B)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

We got the first (tester) batch of tahina done today, not perfect yet but we know where it went wrong, so that's all good. Preparation is now underway!

Any allergies/dislikes we should know about? All of this apart from the shawerma is meat-free, so the vegetablists will be fine.

You're making tahina? I'm afraid I buy mine in a jar <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You're really going for it! That's a LOT of dishes; might take you quite a while. What time do you think you might get here? I'll probably be sleeping in quite late and still need to tidy stuff up and go shopping, so I'd suggest not before 4pm at the very earliest?

Sorry, but I remember turning up on your doorstep quite early and very unexpected. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Apologies, I was quite excited to be meeting new people, and a pleasure it was too.

I wouldn't mind meeting up this time as well, but not entirely sure how the GF would take it??? <!--emo&:mmm:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/mmm.png' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mmm.png' /><!--endemo--> <<-- First time use for this smilie. <!--emo&:ninja:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/ninja.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ninja.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've never seen any in a jar for sale. If we had, we might be doing that instead. <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

However, it's not that difficult to make really; just a few ingredients chucked in a bowl and whizzed through a blender.

JJW009 wrote:That's a LOT of dishes; might take you quite a while.

Nah, not really. That makes one type of starter, two types of main course and two types of dessert. Plus we plan to do a lot of it before we get to yours, so it'll mostly be just the final cooking to do.

I've just noticed the spelling. I assumed you meant:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahini

in which case I usually have some in the cupboard. Sainsbury's sell two different kinds. I was going to use it to make Hummus as one of the dips:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummus_bi_tahini

Mine probably won't be that pretty <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

*edit*

Maybe you meant something like this:

?

Tahina, tahini: It's all the same. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The problem with Arabic words is translating from Arabic to Roman alphabets is guesswork at best, so you'll quite often see a few different ways of spelling things. It made Egyptian menus quite amusing. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

What we're making is actually a tahina sauce - tahina with extra stuff - not actually that far from hummus.

I hope you can make it, be good to catch up after your travels and there's plenty of room. GF is invited too, unless you want an excuse to get away! There's two double rooms so it wouldn't be a problem.

Aww, you should totally come for the moot, I'll be there so your GF won't be the only girl at the party, it's dead laid back and usually V. funny, a good night in, lots of good food and good company. <!--emo&:Aaarghh:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/pirate.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pirate.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Preparations are going well:

I've got the felafel sorted out, so that's not going to be a problem (rather tasty, too! <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

My order of shisha stuff turned up today, all present and correct, so that's all good to go.

I'll be <s>taking delivery of</s> making the baklava tomorrow sometime, so that'll be all sorted. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just got to do another batch of tahina, and prep the koshary and the shawerma - we'll probably do that Friday evening and bung it in the fridge ready to go.

Oh, and the rice pud, but that's Mrs R's department. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

JJ, have you decided yet what you'll be supplying? Any idea on numbers yet? <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->
