What's the best religion, and why?

I'm not religious in the sense that I don't hold one faith to be true above all others. I think there really are as many religions as there are people.

I personally like to pick-and-mix. If I was to give a label to myself, it would be a very vague "Pagan" with influences taken from wherever I find things which make sense.

As I said in another plaice;

Radical Muslims blow themselves up.

Radical Christians go on Crusades.

Radical Pagans get naked and dance :P

I think there is much to be learned from Hinduism (I have a couple of books on order from Amazon...) and Buddhism. These largely peaceful beliefs account for a huge proportion of the world, which largely don't kill each other... at least not in the name of religion.

As I've said before, the Monotheistic Judeao-Christian-Islamic faiths have just enough "truth" in them to sound reasonable, but then go on to incite hatred and violence. Look at the whole of the middle east - Jewish Israel, Muslim Palestine, and the whole Iraq thing... It's the same Damnable God guys!

Much like the old dudes who wrote the American Constitution (which was pretty good - all down hill since then!) I hold certain truths to be self evident. There is one religion which distils these truths to their very essence:

1. Be excellent to one an other.

2. Party on, dudes!

I don't know anything about Rastafarian, except they smoke a lot of pot and didn't start many wars; so I guess maybe they're OK!

The Quakers? Done a lot of good things and don't like to start fights... but man does their life sound boring!

And of course, there is the many tentacled noodley one. Actually reminds me of a devine fungus I once read about - "Sideshow - Sheri Tepper" - a good book if you like SciFi.

So... Any spiritual thoughts you believe worth pondering, or is it all bunkum?

I'm pretty much with you on your beliefs, i don't pidgeonhole myself into anything particular, but if i had to label myself, i would be pagan.

I even wear a silver pentagram on a chain to denote this - well actually, it's more of a kind of 'up yours' to the christians! It doesn't work though, most people assume i'm in to witchcraft/devil worship

I've also got a lot of tolerance for Hare Krishnas - i used to live just down the road from one of their temples, and regularly went to their festivals (open to everyone, free food, leave a donation at the door, thankyou!). you'd be surprised, they're a nice bunch, friendly, and don't get at all offended if you tell them that you have a different religion. compare that to the christian/muslim/jewish lot!

but christianity especially is full of hypocrisy, and there is a lot of evidence that most of what christianity is based on is actually borrowed from other religions! for example, the whole December 25th/saviour born thing is common to quite a few religions.

i think the two things are mutually exclusive - when you're stoned, it's hard enough to get up off the chair, never mind starting a war!

maybe they want to start one, they just can't be bothered!
