OK, apart from the usual 'It's monday, and I've got 5 days of work before the weekend again' feeling, I've got this to deal with:

1. I work in a hotel, which works 7 days a week, although I don't. This means I have to process 3 days' worth of business tomorrow, instead of the usual 1. Also, the receptionists have developed a habit recently of mixing up all the weekends paperwork into one big muddle, meaning I have to sit down for half an hour and seperate it all before I can do anything.

2. The boss is going to have to go to one of our other hotels tomorrow to sort out their rubbish, so I'm running the office by myself.

3. It's payday on Tuesday, and I sent the payslips out on Friday (just before I left), so I'm going to have an endless procession of staff coming into the office to whinge that they haven't been paid right

Hmm... it really is one of those days! Ah well... at least Mondays are crap anyway, it's not like having a Friday ruined... kinda! Was there anything else they could land on you too..? Fire inspection maybe?!

If it makes you feel any better... I'll be spending my hard-earned day off trying to get an emergency pain session at the dentist

hmm... dealing with an auditor...or dealing with a dentist....

Not much difference really, is there? Both professions seem to enjoy inflicting pain on other people!

It's going to be interesting when he sees the ?30,000 of unpaid invoices sitting on my desk, though! :o

Still, at least I'll be suffering during work hours - social masochism just isn't my thing!

but at least you'll get yours over with fairly quickly - this auditor's going to be here all week! which means 5 days of 'Why do you do this? shouldn't you be doing that? what happens if.......' etc.

What joy.

well it wasn't so bad

The auditor tried hard, but I'm happy to say that he couldn't find anything seriously wrong with what I do, in fact he seemed to quite like me!

As a result of his findings so far, I've had all my passcodes for the various computer systems upgraded (necessary to do all the new stuff he wants me to do) - so essentially I am now a sysadmin for all the computer systems in the hotel, I have access to a lot of things that most people don't even know exist - how ?ber1337 is that?

On the downside, I've wasted most of the last 2 days dealing with him and various other bits, so I'm seriously behind with my work - I had the General manager chasing me up for reports that I should have completed and sent out yesterday morning!

Still, all I have to say is 'Sorry, I'm still dealing with the auditor at the moment' and she shuts up. bwahahahaha!

(And yes, I know of a few skeletons she's got hidden from the auditor )

There was a recent article on hacking into hotel systems using the TV - did you read that? A lot of hotels have a system where a special remote control can access the systems through the room's TV to do stuff like mini-bar billing etc...

It's not encrypted in any way, and with a bit of trial - and - error with a laptop (most have infra-red) and the right software, you can charge all your drinks to another room :o

I forget where I read it... might have been PCpro, but I think it was on t'internet somewhere...

I haven't read that one, but I wouldn't be surprised...

Hotel computer systems have the lamest security I have ever seen:

Our Novell supervisor password is just 3 letters long, and hasn't been changed for about 10 years - it's the same password I was using in 1995, in a different hotel, for a different company, on a different system!

Most other user PW's are either blank, the same as the username, or something dumb like 'password'

The system at the hotel I used to work at had max 2 letter username/passwords, and the entry field auto-returned (so you didn't need to press enter). You could access the system in a few seconds by just randomly mashing the keyboard!

In the system at the hotel I work at now, it's possible to upgrade your own user profile, using your own access password, to almost sysadmin level!

Most of the PC's in the hotel have PCAnywhere installed, all with the same password... this is the same in all the hotels in the group (60 odd hotels), and the hotel networks are all linked into one big WAN - therefore, I can sit in my office in my hotel and connect directly to virtually any PC, in any hotel, in the whole group! (I used to do this when I was bored at nights sometimes - enter in an IP address at random, connect to the PC, and move all the desktop icons around :P )

lol... doesn't PCanywhere log the remote IP address? you probably shouldn't get caught doing that

It's typical of a lot of systems that have been in for years... some of our passwords are so stupid, I usually leave them on a post-it note stuck to the monitor because I can't remember them - so in some ways simple is good :P

I used to worry about things like that, but then I discovered how clueless most of the IT team are!

For example, I once wanted to view the internet access logs for a particular workstation (We have a proxy server, so it should be capable of logging this).

I recieved the logs a couple of days later - it was a printout of a screenshot of IE's history folder from the workstation!

But just to be sure, I never did any damage via PCAnywhere - just mucking about!

(I did once get PCA access to the proxy server itself - but bottled out without doing anything - you never know who's sat there in the office, watching! )
