That's a good start - it takes off the encryption so that you can burn it in Nero.

In some countries the law says you HAVE to remove the encryption - I forget where but I heard it somewhere, they say its illegal to stop people watching what they paid for <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Nero will only burn non-encrypted DVDs

Nearly all films are coded so you need to rip them first.

Rip it with smartripper - you can play it off the hard disk then, or turn it into a DiVX file, or burn it to CD or DVD with Nero. You need to rip it first though - it's that pesky region coding Nero can't handle.

The full version of Nero will do it - if you happen to have it.

There are lots of other progs though, here is a free one:

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

there are others... I just rip to DivX because you can fit 5 films on a disk and it looks pretty good, but I have a mate who is obsessed with "making backups" so I'll ask him what he uses. DVD Shrink is good though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Of course you wouldn't, I don't think anyone on here would do such an illegal act.

But there's nothing wrong with making backups, just in case the original disc gets damaged! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Did you use Smartripper? If so you should have a whole set of folders which look the same as when you browse a DVD - it's just now it is decrypted. I think. It's a really long time since I last used it... backed up some Dr Who DVDs years ago...

It might be more than 4GB though so you might have a job fitting back onto DVD, depending what you're using. That's why DVDshrink is so good, apparantly:

"Most DVDs are designed to prevent you from making copies.

The first preventative measure is encryption. Commercial DVD titles are often encrypted, which prevents you from either copying them to your hard drive, or if you manage to do so, being able to play the resulting files. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem with built-in decryption algorithms.

The next problem is not so easy. Most DVD video titles are simply too large to fit, without modification, onto a single recordable DVD-R disk. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem by compressing or "shrinking" the data from your original DVD.

DVD Shrink also allows you to re-author your DVD. You can make your own compilation from one or more source DVDs, or select only the parts of a DVD which you intend to view, thus preserving more space on your backup for the highest quality viewing.

Last but not least, why use DVD Shrink? Because DVD Shrink is free!"

What exactly are you trying to do? What kind of file do you want to end up with?

Why would you want a 6Gig file?

If the 5 or 6 files you're talking about are the vob files - usually about 1 gig each - it's broken up into peaces that size because you can't have a file bigger than 4 gigs if you're using FAT32, and files over 1 Gig mess up some players - and it's part of the DVD format too.

If you want a smallish file you can play on your PC then use something like DVD2AVI with DiVX. There are loads of articles on how to do it:

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/dvd2avi.html

If you're trying to copy a DVD onto another DVD so you can play it on a DVD player, then use DVD shrink to make an iso, and burn it with Nero.

Ok. let me exsplane better. i ripped a dvd with the smart ripper. then got a file.

in this file are 12 files called:

vts_01.d2v 458kb

vts_01.idx 503

vts_01.lst 1kb

vts_01_0.ifo 80kb

vts_01_1.vob 1040870kb

vts_01_2.vob 1048574kb

vts_01_3.vob 1048574kb

vts_01_4.vob 155204kb

vts_01_5.vob 1048574kb

vts_01_6.vob 1048574kb

vts_01_7.vob 809536kb

vts_01_INFO.txt 9kb

right thats what smart ripper spews out. i can use the vts_01_0.ifo to wath the whole film. but i can't use dvd shrink to make it so i can put it onto a dvd to watch on a tv dvd player.

the whole lot is about 5Gb by the way.
