OK I posted my thoughts on Sanity in the other place, but it's a pet topic of mine so I'd thought I'd do a poll here too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I expand upon my thoughts here:

I used to be quite mad. Really, quite mad. I think I started to successfully obfuscate my madness about 5 years ago. Sanity is an illusion which takes practice to perfect. Sanity is a skill, and I'm getting better.

The driving force behind sanity is the quest for acceptance. If you tell the truth all the time and fail to operate by societies nonsensical rules, then you suffer in many ways.

You may be able to find love with a similarly honest mad person, but you'll either be cold and hungry and die on the streets, or be locked up. My "sanity" was spurred by the irrational need for love, and the physical need for shelter and food.

We're born to this world with no clear purpose, and most intelligent people come to wonder what is the point of it all. From this you can either seek faith in religion, or melancholic comfort in the knowledge that others share your emptiness. Such melancholy is clear in much of the music and culture of teenagers such as the Gothic and metal genres.

Most people choose to bury the true question of life, the universe and everything behind a dull drudgery of "Normality". This Normality is the mask we call sanity. It requires selective memory to operate. This can be assisted with drugs which suppress free thought, expression and creativity. A mind which is less clever and creative will be more easily molded into a pointless compliant existence.

I think that anyone who believes they are totally sane must be deluded. Perhaps they chose religious delusion, or maybe they suppressed their darkest fears to a point of denial. Or perhaps they are so busy struggling to survive that they never had time to ask:

"Why?"

I don't think anyone can ask themselves that question without going mad, unless they lack the capacity for either self awareness or self doubt. Ironically these two forms of madness are I believe the most common causes of "Sanity"

From Big_Adams' link on the other place:

Disorder Rating

Paranoid: High

Schizoid: Very High

Schizotypal: Moderate

Antisocial: Moderate

Borderline: Low

Histrionic: Low

Narcissistic: High

Avoidant: Low

Dependent: Low

Obsessive-Compulsive: Low

What is Schizoid Personality Disorder?

Quick Summary:

People with schizoid personality disorder avoid relationships and do not show much emotion. Unlike avoidants, schizoids genuinely prefer to be alone and do not secretly wish for popularity. They tend to seek jobs that require little social contact. Their social skills are often weak and they do not show a need for attention or acceptance. They are perceived by others as humorless and distant and often are termed "loners."

Spooky stuff.....

That describes me pretty well, actually...

Yes, I work in hotels, but really, I just live a lie - I generally hated most of the people I had to deal with, I just got very good at not showing it!

There's a watch in my pocket and its hands are broken.

The face is blank but the gears are turning.

Confusion is a fundamental state of mind.

It doesn't really matter what I'm figuring out.

I'm guaranteed to wind up in a state of doubt

And sanity is a full-time job

In a world that is always changing,

And sanity is a state of mind

That you believe in, sanity.

There's a shadow on the wall where the paint is peeling.

My body's moving forward but my mind is reeling.

Depression is a fundamental state of mind.

It doesn't really matter how my day has turned out.

I always end up living in this world of doubt

And sanity is a full-time job

In a world that is always changing,

And sanity will make you strong

If you believe in sanity.

And sanity is a full-time job

In a world that is always changing,

And sanity is a state of mind

That you believe in, sanity.

I just watched GitS 2 which is full of stuff about the meaning of life. Dunno if you'd say it was Bad Religion lol... mostly Zen stuff.

Some very strange thoughts about a Doll being more perfect than a Human because it feels no pain... and about mirrors;

I was going through my old posts looking for something else when I found this. I thought I'd bump it for the rather mad someone I found since!
