Healthy Eating!

Post by RedeyesUK »

Just recently, I've been feeling a bit under the weather (I've also had a mild kidney infection, which hasn't helped), and have decided to take some peoples advice and go on a nice healthy diet for a bit (a couple of weeks), to see if that clears things up.

So:

No Red meat

No Dairy

No Alcohol

No Junk food/sugary stuff

No tea/coffee

and instead:

Fresh fruit & veg

Fresh fish

Rice/pasta/noodles

Fruit juice

Green tea (apparently very good for you; I also love the stuff, which is a bonus <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Recipe ideas, anyone? :D

Lol... sounds exactly like my diet!!!

I stopped eating "Red Meat" when I did the Hindu thing a few years ago... although I think I've actually turned "Proper" vegi this year - hard to tell on day 2 for sure!!

I also love Green Tea. I recently listed it as a "Favourite Smell" on a dating thing; I said "It seems to cure any ailment" which would be what you're going for!!!

Be careful about the "No Dairy" ... low fat natural yoghurt is extremely healthy, unless you have an intolerance of course.

No Alcohol... well, I'm giving my Liver and Kidneys a break too. Unfortunately I have to go and celebrate the New Year all over again with a couple of whiskies next weekend... but I shan't be repeating the 5 bottles in a week trick any time soon!!!

I'm also cutting down on Wheat Products - so that includes Bread, Pasta, Biscuits etc... and remarkably, my joint-pains have totally recovered since I did that... even my Back which has hurt for 20 years!!!

Anyway... less about Me :P

General Ideas:

1. Asian Food!!! Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai - they are all perfect!!! It's virtually all I eat anyway; Just don't over do the Salt / MSG ... everything has a catch doesn't it!!!

2. Don't over do the fruit juice... a whole litre a day is too much and will give you the shits!!

3. Bananas are nature's Mars Bars. I like them chopped up with yoghurt, or with tinned fruit. They're quite filling and give you that carb-boost.

4. Buy more unusual vegetables like Bean Sprouts, Bamboo Shoots, Water Chestnuts, Leeks, Chinese Leaves etc. Whatever looks like you might be able to chop up and stir-fry; it'll help avoid boredom.

5. Use fresh herbs and spices like Coriander, Basil, Garlic and Ginger.

6. Cold salads make good snacks. I just ate Chick-Peas, tomato, cucumber and sweetcorn in an olive oil dressing.

7. Cook-In sauces are really convenient, especially for doing with Chicken or diced-turkey... but don't over-do them, they're full of sugar and salt. Cornflour, soysauce, tomatoe puree and spices are not that hard to use really!

What kind of food do you like? I mostly eat Indian stuff... I kinda think I was born Indian in the wrong body, I love everything about the place except the heat!!

Excellent, that's just the sort of thing I had in mind!

I was planning on a lot of stir-fries anyway, that's a favourite of mine when I can be bothered to cook properly (I'll be making the effort this time!). I love beansprouts, I never do a stirfry without them! In fact, I used to eat them raw, until I discovered raw beansprouts are a) toxic, and b) high risk for E Coli! So I don't do that anymore...

Fruit juice: I know. Believe me, I know...... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Dairy: The no dairy thing is short-term, just for the next couple of weeks - I don't have much dairy at the moment anyway, so I shouldn't miss it too much.

Bananas: Sorry, but I just don't like them! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> I know they're good for you and so on, but....yeuch!

Anyway, I've just been to tesco's and got a few things, so I'm all ready to go - have to wait on the fish though, the shelves were empty!

I'm currently sitting here chomping on some sunflower seeds - I'd forgotten how much I like them!

Interesting about the wheat products... if you want, I'll ask my sister if she has any good tips (she's allergic, so never has any wheat products at all!)

I don't think I need to worry about the wheat - I just did it to be healthy, wasn't expecting my joints to improve... it's probably unrelated, they always feel a bit better when I don't smoke, and I remember they improved when I quit dairy for a while too.

I think we eat too much wheat - it is pushed onto the American and European markets with stupid subsidies, and marketed in every possible form, shape and product. Rice is generally accepted to have a much better balance of nutrients:

Man can not live on bread alone; but half the world lives on nothing but rice!!

I'm not saying bread is bad... but I think we eat too much, I certainly did. It's basically just stodge and there is always a more healthy option. You don't really need great loads of carbohydrates unless you're going to exorcise. Fruit juice will give you a sugar rush to get you started, and something like Muesli is probably a better form of cereal than toast if you need a more substantial start to the day.

just my thoughts... I have no real dietary knowledge, so feel free to ignore me

I'm currently drinking Jasmine Green Tea btw... I now have 5 different sorts of tea, not including the herbal ones

Jasmine tea reminds me of romantic candlelit dinners for two <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
