Red Back Spider

I've just had my first encounter with a dangerous Australian creature, the Red Back spider.

These things look cool but aren't actually that dangerous, especially for someone in their prime, like me. It is a cool looking beast, and as soon as this one pops it's clogs I will post pictures.

Until then this is an example:

There are plenty more fish in the sea, get your tackle out and see what bites.

That's the first time you've seen one? <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

How long have you been living over there, exactly?

When I was over there, I used to see them all over the place! Nasty little sods, they are.

Although I was living in a more rural area than you are, so the wildlife there was a little more wild....

I also used to see the occasional brown snake near where I was living, as well. Now they used to scare me! <!--emo&:ph43r:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ninja.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ninja.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The brown snake is approximately 1.5 metres long, and is one of Australia's more deadly creatures. They have venom which can cause death to humans relatively quickly if left untreated. Brown snakes up to 2.3 metres have been recorded in Australia.

Not the sort of thing you want to find in your back garden.... <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm living on the coast in Sydney and have been here for over 18 months.

The worst pest I've seen up till now is the mosquito. <!--emo&:rolleyes:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I haven't seen one snake though, and we've been hiking and camping in the bush and rural areas.

Ugh, mosquitos.

mozzies must die. nasty things. :angry:

spiders don't really bother me, unless they're poisonous or huge (or both!), they eat mozzies for a start!

Huntsman, arrggh.

I saw my first one up close on new years day (44?C). A rather drunk friend of mine saw one and thought it would be a good idea to pick it up. Now i'll get close but I wouldn't touch the damn thing. He picked it up and started showing it to everyone who were backing off quite quickly.

All of a sudden it ran up his arm and around his chest and back twice, before finally deciding the safest place would be the deepest, darkest, dankest spot it could find. So it ran down to my mates crotch.

All of a sudden his bravado disappeared and he was squealing like a girl. 'get it off, get it off.' I found a short stick to batter the spider with but couldn't see it easily. I told him to 'bend over now' (I would only say this in particular circumstances, like these) and was able to knock off the spider which quickly ran beneath the decking.

The phrase 'serves him right' comes to mind...... <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For those of you that don't know, a huntsman looks like this:

<img src='http://www.australianfauna.com/images/huntsman.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Big, ugly and hairy. (these guys can grow to about 15cms)Certainly not something I'd want down my pants! <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Spiders in the UK don't bother me at all, if I ever find any at home, I let them carry on with whatever they're doing.From where I'm sitting right now, I can see 3 spiders in different parts of the room. They eat flies and various annoying bugs, so as far as I'm concerned, they pay their rent! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That's the one. Ours was about 10-12cm.

The redback has recently detached its leg, I gave it lots of poison but it hasn't died yet.
