Hacking NON PC things

Clicky!

I've also seen guides to hacking Hotel Systems using the TV remote control, or some software on an IR enabled laptop. Free mini-bar and Porno <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Then there's the DVD region hacks; although mine is a bugger - I need a boot-cd for it...

And of course, Phone Phreaking... something I know a little bit about since I work in data-coms...

Has anyone else come accross some good NON-PC hacks? I never thought of a drinks machine before!!

Very much depends on the machine - most are heavily designed to withstand user abuse (including EM shock and heavy power cycling). This is obviously a dumb machine - should at least need the key to get to the maintenance mode interface!

Besides, there IS a computer in there .. probably a 16bit embedded microP <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just thought,

Best non-PC hack is probably the telephone code sequences that guarantee you get through to a human in the shortest time!!! There's a web-site somewhere ...

But again, you're only fooling the exchange computer!

I don't know if this counts as a 'non PC thing', as you need a PC to do it, but you can change the LCD display on HP printers, merely for your own peurile amusement:

For the un-l33t (or just plain lazy) amongst you, you can also get a readymade program to do it here.

someone told me they knew one lady who stopped at the printer every day ?because it says such nice things to me?. If I can brighten one person's day, every day, my mission is accomplished.

And just to prove that it works, I tried it on my knackered old HP 4000:

Good stuff.

Back to the coke machine. I can remember a time at school (1990) when it wouldn't accept a pound coin if it didn't have enough change. I found that if you turned it off and on again (seriously) and were able to put your coin in before it had settled down, it would accept the coin and give you your drink and change.
