Download Limits

I was just looking at my ADSL router stats:

The days which went over a Gig I'm sure there was some downloading going on, but the other days are just gaming and browsing. Any other gamers here know what their transfers are like?

I'd be stuffed on a 2gig a month limit, you can download that in about an hour!!!

Annoyingly, My ISP's usage stats reset on the 29th, so I've only got 3 1/2 day's worth to work with. Shame, because it's quite detailed:

I was just wondering how people would cope with a 2Gig limit like BT have... you'd use it all in a few days same as me it seems...

Those are usefull stats, I'm sure my ISP doesn't do anything like that! Mine are taken from my router using a piece of SMTP software; I'll post it in the Freeware forum.

I wouldn't worry about the usenet, you probably just viewed an advert or something.

Yeah, but AFAIK that 2gig limit is just for the cheapy 'basic' package - I had BT broadband before (one of the better packages), and I think it had a 15gig limit - even with that, I'd be pushing the limit with my standard usage these days....

I've had worse though - when I was living in Oz, I had a dial-up account with a 512mb monthly limit!

By about the 20th of each month, I'd be switching off all the images in the browser in a desperate attempt to save bandwidth, and I'd usually end up going to the local net cafe for the last couple of days each month. Not good!

I very rarely go above 2g for a whole month and have a 10g cap.

However if I paid the same money to the Oz equivalent of BT, Telstra or Optus it would be about 2g. Looks like I can start downloading a few sci-fi series after all. <img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' />

A 265k line here is still classed as Broadband.

The really stupid thing that annoys me greatly is that most capped plans are advertised as 'unlimited'.

I'm supposedly with the best ISP, as they put in their own hardware, are cheap and have excellent service. Now I'm just waiting for them to upgrade my local exchange to ADSL2+. Telstra have put a 1.5mbit cap on all lines and are dragging their heals much like BT used to.

wish i had some clue how the hell to get that stuff up then again i just got an 8 gig and a 5 gig file so theres a nice chunk for you.

Which file type would theoretically give you the best quality?

What would the theoretical filesize be for a 60 minute tv show (45 minus adverts) be?

Mpeg 1 ( .mpg) is the lowest quality, but highest compatibility. It's usually 384x288 25fps, the same as VCD and similar to VHS. It's perfectly good for most things, and it's what most of my Pop Videos are in.

.AVI is very variable, but can offer very good quality. These days it will usually be DivX or Xvid, typically 640x480 which is near DVD quality.

.OGM is the most excellent, especially for DVD rips because it supports multiple sound tracks and subtitle streams in a single file.

You can fit 2 hours onto a 700MB CD, but some people prefer to encode to a higher quality. 1 hour of near DVD quality DIVX would be from 300MB to 1GB depending on the content. Stuff ripped off TV will usually be smaller file size, lower quality. Something like "Total Darkness" compresses to a smaller file at the highest quality, because the darkness is readily compressible.

i class about 120mb+ (divx) ok for an half hour show but the bigger the better tho. got a few gig and over films and tv shows for quality.

ogm + mkv are good tho. i mean i "ripped" cowboy bebop each file is about 200mb and it has dual audio and subtitals.

I never knew finding a decent torrent would be such hard work. I've got one running atm but it looks like it may take almost 3 days. It should be worth it though.

depends on were you look. could try the tvundergrounds site. or even a few tracker i would say but that would be wrong....mmm kay (e-mail me or somthing)
