OK so I'm supposed to be some kind of expert; but sometimes stuff just makes no sense!!!

I've been swapping stuff around to make 3 sensible machines and 2 USB external drives.

1. Bought a 250GB Freecom USB drive from eBuyer for about ?70. It's great; I converted it to NTFS no prob, it works and its quiet.

2. Moved most of my anime onto it so I could reformat.

3. Put the rayburn TNT 64pro graphics card into the rayburn machine

4. Put the expensive Asus V7100 Deluxe Combo (doesn't that sound like it should come with Fries??!) in the less rayburn machine

5. Put my 200GB hard disk into a USB enclosure with the rest of my anime on, and the porn...

6. Put both 40GB drives into the rayburn machine so I can RAID them and use it for Office work. I even made the spare room into an "office" for it.

7. Piled all the expensive bits on the bed in the "office" - I haven't finished yet...

OK so here's my problems so far!!

1. The TNT 64pro card has stopped working - its OK in VGA / 16 colours but just goes BLACK when I try to change mode <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

2. My Expensive V7100 card which used to be fine is now doing odd things, despite being back in the Asus machine it was happy in years ago...

3. My 200GB drive displays as "Partition - Foreign" in disk manager

4. Windows 2K freshly installed used 80MB of RAM and was fast. After doing some Windows Updates it now uses 140MB and is seriously constipated.

5. The last windows update keeps on going over and over - I've had to disable it!

6. One of my 40GB drives absolutely refuses to share an IDE lead. It only works when set to CS on the end of a ribbon by itself...

7. Firefox which used to run just fine on my "less crap" machine now goes liek a dog.

8. My "Less Crap" machine refuses to overclock - when I put the faster RAM in it about a year ago, I tested it and it went up to about 2300 or something; I can't get it over 1850 now!

So - my office machine is stuck in 16 colour 640x480 with no raid, and my main "family" machine for the desk down stairs works kinda OK but the screen keeps flashing... And I can't read my porn

Any guesses what the games machine is going to do to me!!??

Can't you replace the smileys with Ragnarok Online ones? I'll find some examples...

Well I've solved problem 5 - bloody MS don't check which version of Microsoft Data Access Components you have installed before it tries to patch it... BAKA! I've installed the latest version and now its ok. PC seems a bit faster too, not too sure though...

I expect I can speed up FF a bit using those tweaks... now where were they again...

I have a NEW problem though... my copy of InstantDVD 7.06 which I use to make video DVDs doesn't work. I am not alone; the forums are full of people with the same problem but NO FIX! AAaarghhH! It used to work; what's changed !!!??? I bet its another MS update

THIS is the problem me & everyone else are having... it is Seriously CRAP!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGHHH!!

And... breath :D

OK I solved the InstantDVD problem...

I found this in the event log:

Event Type: Warning

Event Source: MsiInstaller

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1004

Date:&nbsp; 10/05/2006

Time:&nbsp; 21:45:44

User:&nbsp; WILLOW&#092;Administrator

Computer: WILLOW

Description:

Detection of product '{A8A7ACEF-A7AF-4129-9BC1-4F33A4C31EEC}', feature 'InstantDisc', component '{B2917442-CA7F-4C07-B15E-12E773E64C46}' failed.&nbsp; The resource 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER&#092;Software&#092;VoB&#092;CD Wizard&#092;7.0&#092;DataPath&#092;Item4' does not exist.

That path in the registry was created against the user who installed the product. I was logged on as someone else. Interesting that I could find it, but the tech support bods still haven't after 4 years...

Yes thats right. This shitty peace of coding only seems to work for the person who installed it. I've seen this on some other things too, I think it was a HTML editor I was trying to show Koneko... but couldn't for the same reason.

Anyone come accross this before? Software that only expects you to have one user, and that user has full admin rights, else it won't work!!??

Grr, I really hate sloppy coding like that....

One thing that really bugs me:

At home, I have 'my documents' on my server, meaning I can get the same stuff from whichever PC I happen to be on. I've changed the location of the 'my documents' folder to point to the server, and on the whole, it works well.

The problem is, several programs will automatically dump stuff to 'C:&#092;documents and settings&#092;%username%&#092;My documents', even though I've changed the environment variable to point elsewhere. Most programs don't have a problem with this, but a few of them do. My digital camera software is a big culprit for this!

Yep those are fave gripes too. My media centre had a 4Gig C partition and the rest as D so I could easily reinstall windows without trashing my data...

I've given up on 4Gigs now though. On this one, I've gone for 160GB all for Windows. Its just easier for everyone, this is going to be a shared machine and "Some People" like to keep gigabyte sized downloads on their desktops :P

I'm getting well confused with profiles though. My TV tuner for example, I've set up all the stations on it... and its forgotten them! It even forgot it was in England  bloody thing... not sure if its because I keep changing profiles or what though... another problem for the list!!!

They all sound too familiar, and I am a n00b compared to you guys.

My worst gripe atm is that I have just recently installed the latest version of skype, and the bloody thing wiped all of the previous contacts for me and the missus. WTF!

That is the sort of thing that means it will be less likely to be used in favour of MSN etc. that don't have this problem.

dag NAB it! Skype was the next thing on my list to install.

The main reason for installing W2K instead of XP (apart from cost...) is that my Blue Tooth headset doesn't work properly on XP. XP goes "Oh Noooo - those aren't signed drivers, use the windows ones!" except the MS drivers don't know what a headset is.

You can tell windows to use the unsigned drivers, and then it works fine... until you reboot the pc, or wait for it... turn off the headset! It installs as a new device all over again and the "broken" XP drivers come back to destroy the world!

At the very least I was hoping Skype would remember my contacts :'(

Oh - Firefox just had an update which wipes out all your favourites. It did it to me and Koneko, so I think its everyone. There is a backup of your favourites though - look in the Documents and Settings. REMEMBER to CLOSE FF before you restore the backup or it will be erased when you do!

You can export your contacts and import them once you've upgraded. I think.

I would have done this had I known, and suppose I could still have restored the system and then exported etc. etc. In the end I thought it would be easier not to use skype.

Stoopid dumb ass programmers!
