people, who art thou on this merry evning/morning/day (delet as needed)

got a car question. even though my 82 mini is not on the road and has no breaks i was wondering about the exsught. basical my car has a muffler and a tube i was thinking of change it with soemthing of my own design seeming as there is only a muffler and not catalitic converter i was thinking of making my own exsught from maybe 2inch pipe and a bit of tig welding. so what do you think bad idea or good idea?

You need to think about the insurance - that is a modification and you'd need to declare it. Probably add about ?200 to the renewal!!

A modification can be something as superficial as a stick-on spoiler... the insurance co think it makes you a nutter and thats why they put the price up :o

But yeah; weld a bit of shiny pipe work to it. Cool :D

Don't take the muffler box out though, or it'll fail the MOT...

I know nuffing about cars btw !!!

are you talking about changing the whole exhaust, or just the tailpipe (the bit that sticks out the back)?

IM(NS)HO, the best thing you can do is get a centre pipe. these are quite cheap for mini's, and will give you an exhaust pipe in the centre of the car, rather than at the side. looks so much better!

if you're just doing the tailpipe, AFAIK you can stick whatever you want on the back, as long as you don't do anything to the muffler. why not stick a traffic cone on the back, just to be different?

i was going to try the whole thing, it's all a bit ragged at the mo. also i plan NEVER to get thoses little stick on tail pipe thing. i can see the point, i may have some burbary in my car but i'm no boy-racing chav. i hate stuff like that. people buy a tip, chepo alloys or stick on spinners, racing fuel cap and a ?60.00 wing from halfords and drive about like a nutter.

Also i have to have a muffler, dam. is it a law thing or a MOT thing??

it's both.

the law says you need a muffler, the point of the MOT is to check that your car is compliant.

you can go without (and just put one on for the MOT), but you'll be in trouble with the boys in blue if they pull you over (and they probably will with that noise!)

besides, a car running without a muffler makes a hell of a racket! drive it for too long and it'll do your head in.... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

:EDIT:

just thought, having too big a pipe welded on to the standard muffler box might actually reduce your engine's performance - when all the exhaust gases come through the pipe, they'll get to the box (which will have a pipe diameter of 1" or so) and basically create a bottleneck. this will then cause the exhaust gases to go back up the pipe until it gets back to the engine, which will limit the engine's ability to expel it's gases.

this is what's known as 'backflow' :D

what about if i use a muffler off a diffrent car (scrapped or 'borrowed') and use that with the bigger pipe. also cut a larger hole on the muffler for the bigger pipe.

the is all going to be a while until i can do this thoug as my car is bugged and i have the overwelming erge to push it into my local river.

dam police, i just want my 998cc 1982 mini to go sligtly faster, so i can at lest annoy BMW drivers. i've only relly drivien on lession a few time my dad let me drive but all BMW driver that i have met so far have either cut me up or nealy killed me. ah well just have to wait until :
