At work on Monday, we got an email from our IT department, explaining that they'd just reintroduced their web filtering software. No big deal, we've had it before - they took it offline last year for some reason.

So during a quiet patch on Friday, I thought I'd have a quick browse:

<img src='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/re ... /proxy.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

No more silliness at work for me. Bugger.

I like the way it's blocked as 'Information Technology' - There's no technology on here, and - let's face it - very little information! <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Can anyone think of any 'legitimate business reasons' for why I might need to access this site from work? <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I like the way they've blocked IT !!

It's an odd catagory to block. Porn, Gambling, Games, Messaging and email I can understand - but "Information" ; that would make me LOL except it's a bummer...

I may be able to come up with a way around it, but it depends how strict their filter is. It sounds like it probably blocks just about everything unless its on a "white list" <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, it's a strange setup, I'm not sure where the policy comes from. I don't think it's a whitelist though.

For example, the TR7 forum I go on to is blocked as 'Clubs and message boards', but the general Triumph forum I go on (which is a message board for a club!) is still accessable. Similarly, Gmail is unblocked, but pretty much every other webmail site is blocked.

Apparently, all Polish websites are blocked completely - we have quite a few Polish workers here, so they're not happy at all! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'll set up a reverse-proxy and email you a link to it. It won't be today though, I can't be arsed to work out how to do it! It'll basically cache the forum on my server, so you won't be going to the invision site. I don't have the bandwidth to let everyone in that way though...

OK I've set the proxy up. It's not a very pretty thing to remember though!

I've sent a PM with the details. Let me know if it works!

Hmm... actually that's really not going to work very well. As soon as you click on something it's gonna break <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Let me know if you can get to the home page though, because if thats blocked there's not much I can do! If you can get the index OK then I need to try harder...

I shall give it a go tomorrow. If I don't reply back for a week or so, you'll know it hasn't worked! <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

But don't stress yourself too much over this - it's not the end of the world. Most webmasters would just say 'tough kitten luser!'

Only on this server I think <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's actually a harder problem than I thought because the forum uses absolute addresses rather than relative ones.

I have to think of a way I can get the proxy to replace every single incident of "z12.invisionfree.com/The_Wired/" with the "proxy/Forum" address... and since I've just set up Apache for the very first time in my life, it's all a bit new to me. I dunno if its even possible <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Can you get Yahoo? If so, there may be a way around it using their cache.

Ooh - actually I have a better way. Watch this space!!

DONE!

New Address for forum:

forum.yourwired.net

Everyone can use that, it goes through my main USA server which I actually pay for <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I hope that helps!

I shall try that tomorrow. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The proxy didn't work, unfortunately - when I tried it I got the websense page again, this time saying - and I quote -

The Websense category "Uncategorized" is filtered.

<!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's blocked because it doesn't have a category? WTK? That's just unfair..... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
