Pull on the diff with one hand and then with the other hit the diff with a hammer side-on from as many angle as possible. Hopefully it will work loose even if it is only a few microns each time. It may also be easier in the morning once the WD40 has penetrated further.

Hmm, the problem is, I can't actually get to where the shaft goes in the diff - it's buried deep in the axle casing!



Here's a pic, to show you what I mean:

As you can see, the end of the driveshaft is stuck right down in the middle of the axle casing.



But yeah, I've spayed a whole load of WD40 down the axle casing, hopefully that'll loosen it up a bit in time for the hammer-fest to resume in the morning.



Once again, the curse of the Haynes manual strikes again. In my days with the haynes manual there wern't any forums. I can also remember two examples when it was of now use whatsoever.



I had to change the panhard rod on my fiesta. It took four hours of drilling and sawing to remove the old seized bolts. I replaced the rod and bolts in less than 4 minutes. I was even kind enough to use copper-eaze when I did.



The first time I changed the brake pads on the same fiesta it took over two hours for one side and lesss than 20 minutes for the other, once I knew what I was doing.



Of course these don't include the amount of skin lost or expletives used.

Yeah, I remember those days.... although back then I was mostly mucking around with Vauxhalls, which would pretty much come apart by themselves anyway! :lol:



But I do remember a few 'quick' jobs that turned into 2-day, knuckle-grazing, frustrating swearathons - usually due to the odd nut that wouldn't loosen up for love or money. grrr..

Do you know any mehcanics or garages where you can borrow or hire tools from.?

You may be able to get yourself some pullers or slide-hammer. These will make the job easier if not cheaper.

Normally, yeah. There's a hire shop down the road from me, they're pretty good.



But it's bank holiday weekend now, so they're closed until tuesday....

Well I did it! :D



I eventually gave up with the old axle (turns out it was the wrong one for the car anyway :rolleyes: ) and went out and got another one from some very nice chaps in Lancashire. 2 hours of crawling around under the car later (I've still got bits of gravel in my hair

20 tons. That's quite a bit of force!



I had to change the front discs on a car once and couldn't get the hub nut undone. It eventually came off when I was using a 3+m scaffolding pole over the end of the socket set to increase the leverage.



Motoring should be fun.

That'll do it!



Although I did try that trick once trying to undo, of all things, a wheel nut - I ended up breaking the cars' wheel brace, two sockets (including one I went out and bought specially, price ?6.99) and the t-bar handle for my socket set before the thing budged.



Good job I didn't get a puncture on that wheel! :blink:



The good thing now is that I know what I'm doing, and all the bolts on the rear axle are nice and new and shiny, so if I need to take the axle out again (which I'll need to do when I upgrade the gearbox to 5-speed), it'll be a doddle. In theory, anyway......

Although to be honest, most of the bolts I undid came out fairly easily, which was a surprise, considering the age of the car - rear suspension/axles are always the worst areas for seized bolts, most of the front of the car is usually so covered in engine oil, you don't tend to get many seized nuts!



Which reminds me, I've got to take a look under the car and try to track down the oil leak that seems to have mysteriously appeared....
